[Android] Latest update broke gamepad support

May 18, 2013 Alexandria link
I have a Transformer with a keyboard dock and two controllers, both of which are roughly identical to the game. The first is the OnLive bluetooth controller, with a keylayout file mapping it like an Xbox 360 controller. This has worked great for as long as I've played the game, but starting with the latest update, whenever I move the left analog stick, the ship turns to the right and down. It doesn't matter what direction I tilt the stick, that's the direction it goes. Even if I unmap the stick entirely (by mapping both axes to none), it still does it. The stick still works for throttle, it's just unusable because it's constantly turning that direction.

I plugged in an Xbox 360 controller and it has the exact same issue. I basically can't play the game on my tablet right now, please fix it!

Neat. The forums double posted my thread.

No, you clicked the button twice.

If you delete the main post of the other thread before anyone responds it will delete the thread.

The forum should be able to detect rapid posting and throttle it. Like every other forum written in the past decade. Forums fault, not mine!

Exact same problem, EXACTLY. Im using the Ouya with its stock bluetooth controller. Was fine and great until last update. Now left stick ship pitches down & to the righ now matter what I do in options. & I had no fancy setups. Just downloaded game from Ouya market & played. Was fine until update now this. Hopefully they get to this quick I am paying $10 a month.

Players with Ouya problems, can you try something for me?
Download and sideload this version:
http://download.vendetta-online.com/VendettaOnline-sideload.apk
and give it a try.

You should be able to use the installed browser to go to that URL.

The problem persists after using that sideloaded APK on my Transformer. It's not an Ouya, but given we share the same problem, fixing one should hopefully fix both.

Alexandria, can you send me your config.ini and wgaf.cfg files please? (through a support ticket would be fine.) the files are located on your device's /sdcard/VendettaOnline folder.

I poked around in those two files a bit to see if anything jumped out at me. My second try was deleting these lines in wgaf.cfg:

bind MOUSEX +LookX
bind MOUSEY +LookY

Sure enough, that resolved it. The mouse still works while in the menus. I can still upload the files for you if you wish, but I suspect they are irrelevant now as I've seemed to pinpoint the problem ;P.

Hm, interesting. Still, I'd like to verify that is the only problem.
Thanks.

Not a problem -- I've opened a support ticket with the files.

Thanks. I think I found the problem and will release an update soon.
It turns out that it's related to turning off touch-screen mode, and the mouse binds exposed the problem.

Update released. Please test.

Ahh yeah, playing with touchscreen mode on and a game controller is annoying cause useless touch UI stuff wastes screen real estate so I disabled it. I assume it's disabled by default on Ouya.

Added the lines back to wgaf.cfg, updated, and it's working fine. Thanks for the quick response time :).

Somewhat related to touchscreen mode being disabled: is it possible for you to allow autofire with touchscreen mode is off? If touchscreen mode is on, autofire works even with a controller, but when touchscreen mode is turned off, the only option in the settings UI is "disabled". I understand if this is meant to be a balance thing, and that autofire is too strong with a controller, but I feel combat is still rather hard with a gamepad, and autofire helps a ton, but I really hate touchscreen mode.

Another minor problem: if you have the interface open while you are not docked and try to use the left stick to move the mouse, it also moves your ship. This makes it impossible to mess around with stuff while you are mining as you constantly fly out of range.
