Any reason why the last reply from a dev was like in May. (just did a quick check, might be wrong)
You offer all these various clients for different os's and such, and what I'm suggesting is trying to keep up with those various forums, and check on how the actually client is working IN GAME and see what we all notice.
Just saying.

We generally have volunteer users who have agreed to "cover" platform-specific forums (but, they may have dropped off without our knowing). Those forums are more for users on the respective platforms to help other users with common platform-related issues. Should major game-specific problems become evident that are more than known platform quirks, they should be bumped to Bugs, or (if private or a security issue) reported by the Support Ticket system.
We do not have the resources at this time to monitor all the forums on a regular basis.
Also, I believe Michael predominately uses the Linux build of the game for his own usage. But I can't speak to whether he runs into the same limitation issues as others.

Would it be better to put inquiries like this one in a support ticket then?
I do use the linux client (64 bit) day-to-day, and I check the linux forum once in a while. Looking at it now, the only issue I see, which hasn't been responded to as I would have, is the Mesa compatibility thing (which I would say is best placed in Bugs if we don't respond in Linux). I'll investigate that issue sometime soon, but (apart from intel gpu owners) you really want the proprietary drivers for decent performance.
I appreciate all your help in the Linux forum, by the way, ARF.

I know right? It takes hours to read the several-dozen new posts per day that you get from VO's massive userbase. I know that Rin fellow manages to actually read everything but the Win/Mac/Droid sections every morning while he eats breakfast, but he's just some kind of amazingly awesome speed-reader who can process a whopping 160 words per minute! :P

There's some GPUs that are not supported or don't work well with the proprietary drivers. I know I've seen problems with a number of nVidia (usually quadro mobile) chips as well as older (even very capable ones like the HD4870) Radeons that're not supported anymore by their proprietary drivers, but work with the open sores drivers.
I've held back Xorg updates on my desktop simply because my second video card (Radeon HD2600) isn't supported at all on the later versions of fglrx.
As for helping out. You're welcome I guess. :)

And it's awesome enough that Rin pointed out what everyone else knows is obvious.
Regardless, things went in the correct direction, and if I came across as a ass, so be it.. although that wasn't my goal at all, progress was. If you can't handle constructive feedback, bite me.
Oh, and mom, taking a cheap shot at someone that's been around for 5+ years that has contributed more time than I care to admit, just isn't cool.
And we all still want to know about the spidey visit. ;)

Reading the threads is not the problem. Taking the time to carefully respond is what is time consuming. As devs, we have to put time into our word choices, as people will read a great deal into it. I often spend half an hour or more writing a brief 3-sentence response, to make sure it is unlikely to be misconstrued in some way. "Monitoring more forums in a responsive way" is time consuming. Our workload and hours per week are already pushed way out there.

I don't really know what this comment is about. Unless there's some other discussion channel going on that I'm not aware of, I'm pretty sure Momerath's earlier response in this thread, and thanking of ARF, was entirely genuine. If this was misconstrued, it serves to illustrate my earlier point.
first, ice roids don't get textured, just all black. The config file has shaders, compression, and AA turned off.
The above line comes from this thread, which seems to be indicative of the issues being raised. Here's the deal: Linux GPU drivers are a mess. They're a constantly-shifting mess, where working around one issue causes something else to break in the next driver release. So, we work around what we can, the best that we can, and we ship something at a reasonably minimized complexity to have the highest probability of success.
I'll prod Ray to check this out very quickly and maybe just strip all the Mesa-related checks and let things fall where they may. If it still breaks, you guys will be better served by contacting the Mesa devs, and having them test against the non-working case in the game. But, we'll see what we can do first.

What cheap shot? Did you think my thanks to ARF was sarcastic? If so, your meter is set way too sensitive.
Hmm, if you go back and check, you might note that I never said anything about replying. I definitely understand how time consuming replies can become, even for non-official people.
No, I think we might have just misunderstood eachother slightly. To my mind, "monitoring" means reading and at least being aware of whatever various issues people have. I consider monitoring and responding to be two separate things. So when I read your statement, I interpreted that as saying you don't even bother to keep up with the forum, and as providing a pretty poor excuse.
So to clarify: I don't expect immediate daily responses. Better to do things than to talk about doing them :)

Regarding the rendering issues, I posted to the Linux forum thread.
mom: This entire msg thing can get outta whack at times. I'm bad. Hop in a dev bus and kill me. ;)
