Friends key codepage,very minor

Nice idea, but unfortunately my parents saw fit to equip me with a name containing letters not found in the US character set. Specifically, the second letter in Jørgen comes out as a nonsense character. Not even close to being an issue, but seeing as your playerbase is kinda international I thought I'd mention it

Huh, interesting. Thanks for the report. VO's in-game font doesn't include those characters, so I'm not sure what to do about.

What about adopt ASCII 8bits, or UTF8, as a step towards internationalization of VO?

Surely a major, but almost invisible, change...

It would certainly be major.

It would be very annoying if people were running around with player names containing random international characters that don't even make sense... E.G. "Håxø® |\/|åS†e®" or something else completely nonsensical and annoying to type.

Maybe you could simply disallow such characters being used in the actual ingame player names the same way you disallow asterisks, slashes, and "sector" from being used in names.

What's wrong with E.G Håxø ? Seems a perfectly reasonable name to me :-)

Perhaps restrict the amount of international characters to 2 or 3?

I don't think you can actually create player names with non-US characters, I couldn't at any rate.
Apr 13, 2010 raybondo link
You can't.
He's referring to his Account's Full Name, which gets displayed in the Friend Key give menu. That name is changeable from the web site, so you can type in non-7bit ASCII characters.

Perhaps this is one of those time when it is simpler for Incarnate to dawn a Cowboy hat and announce "welcome to America - speak english"

Kidding of course.

I'd like to chime in with an addendum to this.

I just got the opportunity to send out a Friend Key. The person I sent it to is German, so I sent him a message in German. The in-game panel for entering the personal message isn't (fully) international-capable. When I entered a 'ü' (U-Umlaut, with the dots, err, diaresis on top) I saw a 'u'. That's pretty close, but not German. 'ß' (that's a double S, not a beta) got mangled beyond recognition.

No priority, I think. I used the standard 2 character "escapes" common in German from typewriter times :)
