Audio feedback for weapon hits

Problem: The audio feedback for weapon hits is very annoying, and sounds far too much like a system bell. Not only is the sound effect annoying in itself, but it confuses the hell out of stupid newbs who think that their computer is about to explode when they hear it.

Expected Behavior: This noise should be easily audible and distinguishable, but not annoying, and should certainly not sound like a system bell. I can provide examples of better sound effects if desired.

Steps to repeat: 1) Undock from a station with a weapon equipped.
2) Shoot at something
3) Notice annoying clipped-square-wave sound effect

OR

1) Go to one of the myriad posts in which this problem arises, (for example http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/6/21478 and scroll to the post made by asuspoju )
2) Observe the confusion in the poor newb's words as he struggles to discern whether the sound effect is a feature or a bug.

I can post my errors.log file, but I have a feeling that it isn't relevant in this case.

That beep was from way back. Back when Quake2/3 were all the rage. They had a beep sound when you hit an opponent in multiplayer and we emulated that. It does need revamping. What are some suggestions for different sounds?

The hit notification sound in Nexuiz is quite tasteful, IMO. The sound effect isn't nearly as harsh, and has a more complex waveform which makes it easily identifiable as an intentional sound. I'll whip up a couple example sounds tonight. I'd certainly be willing to sign over all rights on a 1-second long audio bleep to Guild Software, haha.
