I have some enormous visual changes in the game after the patch and fps is generally reduced. Screen shots will be linked below.
System:
HP Laptop
Intel GMA 945 integrated graphics card
shared memory (so low, less than 32MB).
OS: Linux Ubuntu 9.04
up to date, at present, as far as I can tell. though I'm downloading a kernel update as we speak.
Previously, I Had issues with severe slow-down with overlays on screen. This was resolved by enabling UXA (there's a forum thread in "Linux" about it). Seems to have come back somewhat, depending on the amount of stuff on screen.
Game *was* working fine, IMO, before the update.
Last set of things I had tried were the quick-set 16MB settings and then disabling some of the last few items in that, even.

After setting the "16MB" settings:

Not to be a ass or anything, but you bought a laptop with a crap ass Intel GPU.
Looks like the texture is being compressed down so low that it's not recognizable. I'd guess that's the sun and "flare" in that sector.
I would try:
Disabling Texture Compression
Disabling Shaders
Then I would recommend setting your integrated graphics window (in BIOS or whereever) to something a little higher, like maybe 32 or 64MB, and then try using the 32MB Visual Quality settings (albeit with Shaders and TC disabled).
Unfortunately, the Intel chips have a lot of driver bugs and stuff they don't support. We try to work around it, but we don't actually have a 945.. and it can vary widely depending on the Linux install (which has been covered in the news, lately).

Incarnate, thanks, I'll give those a shot and see if I can find the video settings to increase the shared RAM.
Shaders and Compression have been disabled for a while already.
For now, I just turn the background off and it's all fine, though less visually appealing. Oh well, game play is where it's at.
Vskye: yes, yes I know. There's actually a funny story about how I came to own this laptop. It involved arriving at a conference to find out I had an invited oral the next morning and the poster I *thought* I was presenting was now useless. Without a laptop at the time, I rented a cargo van (the only thing available) and drove to the nearest BestBuy, walked in and said, "I need a computer that will run powerpoint, NOW." That being the criteria, I got the cheapest thing offered and made my presentation (it went well, by the way). Anyways, I've lamented the hardware in this thing ever since, but I don't have the disposable income to justify getting a new one quite yet.

DivsionByZero: good story, and I can definitely understand the income side of things. ;)
Hmm, seems I am hitting the same bug. Moreover, I cant see any textures on asteroids. Can I help to get rid of this behavior?
I have the same laptop and very same OS. And please, don't ask me to buy better hardware... ;)

... including screenshot. I cannot fight against the white background and also chat window is barely readable.

That looks awesome. The warp animation should be like that.
I am haveing the same issue on a Vector Linux platform with a intel gma 945 and the GKGL driver. Also the rocky roids look white with no texture.
Also, the new EC textures seem a little less high resolution, lol:

I checked my bios, and performed some changes to xorg.conf to make sure I'm using all available video ram (256MB) by following this:
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/intel-graphics-performance-guide-for-ubuntu-904-jaunty-users.html
No real improvement, except to increase my loading time substantially, though I'm not surprised since shaders are completely disabled as is texture compression.
Yes, I want to buy a new machine, but I can't right now.
All that said, my temporary fix is to completely turn off the background. It's a little weird flying against complete black, but it keeps me in the game.

Can I kindly ask for old version engine? Is there a way for us to have it as the workaround? At least for us unlucky who play VO on cheap business class notebooks? It would very help us...
945 and 950 are massively different. A 950 shouldn't have these problems...
FYI: my chipset is:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)
sorry, I should have posted it before :-|

I'm not sure if this qualifies as a visual bug, but the reflection of the sun off the solar panels seems a bit strange, large and rather bright.

Thanks everyone for the posts so far. It's strange that there ends up being no textures what so ever on the asteroids and ships.
The big white nebula seems to be related.
With shaders disabled, there should be no performance difference between the previous version of the engine and the new version.
kihjin, that looks fine to me. It is a bit big compared to the main star, but that's about it.

Ray: It also seems over-focused too. It just seems like an unnatural reflection to me. Thanks for looking at it.
kihjin, i experimented with a different type of specular highlight. It falls off really differently than normal specular highlights.
DivisionByZero, flyinglama, neomoriar:
I found the problem with the missing textures and white nebula (which was also caused by a missing texture).
There was code that was not committed that compensated for the lack of S3TC/DXTC support from the Intel video driver. It'll be fixed on monday.

I salute you, Sir!
