Ok i think i fixed the problem with a little help. I just updated my graphics card drivers. I know i should have thought of it before but duhhh i'm an idiot. But cool pics though :)
I have a MSI Wind U100 netbook. OS is Windows XP home SP3. They have Mobile Intel(R)945 Express built in. I also got the screen artifacts from the asteroids.
I found a fix. Set Options > Video > Shader Capabilities to OFF.
I must say that this game runs well even on this low spec machine.

yep i have an eee pc 901 with a gma945 and i have these artifacts too, i tested on an eee 900ha with a gma 945 and i got the same results.
bad graphics cards, i had that updated to a decent card and they all went away
This isn't cause of a bag chip/card its drivers/vendetta
I have 2PC's in my house with the GMA945 and they both do the exact same thing, all the other comps in the house have 4670's and they don't have the odd polygons flying all over the place.
