every time i try to login i hit play.. and i go to the black sreen.. but it takes several tries to get me to where i can actually play or see anything..on average it takes about 5 tries to login.. any ideas what might be up?

Have you:
1) try changing the MTU in the network options of the game (to "compatibility mode"),
2) try bypassing a router if present,
3) ping majikthise.guildsoftware.com,
4) tracepath majikthise.guildsoftware.com,

5) Let us know the results of 3 & 4 and how 1 & 2 affect your situation.
