JahelaJ got the basic miner ribbon and it stated she had 14043 units left to mine to get the next level. She then mined over 1100 units to get to step 2 of a couple of rare mineral ribbons.

The Basic Miner ribbon still showed that she needed to mine 14043 units.

As i under stand it to get the basic miner ribbons, you have to mine the ore AND sell it without a mission active. If you haven't sold the ore yet, when you do you will get closer to basic mining 2.
