crap game speed.
I have been using the same computer for vo for about 2 years now and the game has been running worse and worse. Now its at the point where i can't use neuts or agt most of the time.
system layout:
amd athalon xp2600
1gb ram
nvidia geforce 440mx 128mb agp
win2k
does anybody have any suggestions? im running verry littel in the background only lavasoft ad-aware and a few firefox windows. my ping is consistantly in the 80's or 90's, my machine is almost certainley virus free (i check it regularley), ive even tried restoring from a backup i made on another hdd using max blast's partition copy tool. now that i look however i have enough firefox tabs open in each window to use 181 mb of ram but thats still a drop in the bucket relativley speeking.

i have a pair of 800mhz p3's that easily overclock to 1ghz each and a geforce mx4000 128mb card, how would something like that run VO with about 1 gb of ram (i might have more but i dunno) and what os would probably be best on it for that purpose? and don't say vista, i aint got that kind of cash to throw around atm

Thanks, I appreciate your support and good will. Enjoy the game.
Whistler, in the future please assume that when I'm poking fun at someone (especially the Dev/Guide team) it's meant to be light hearted, not mean spirited. Looking over my post I can see how it might have been hurtful, for that I am sorry. However not to pick on you, but you do appear to get upset when somebody makes a new thread for a bug or suggestion when there is another thread that was abandoned a year ago. I guess that is part of your job though as a guide. I must admit that I neglected to use the search button before posting this topic so redirect away, perhaps theres already a solution out there that I missed.
Perhaps we need an index thread stickyified like in the suggestions forum.

I've been thinking about an index for Bugs, though it's certainly more complex than suggestions in that the problems change over time. Some of the ones about ping, FPS, firewalls and Cogent are probably worth indexing.
Perhaps you've been reading threads abandoned a year ago, but my posts redirecting people to the READ FIRST thread have been quite tame for ages. Others get much more strident than I. Perhaps you are attributing other people's posts to me? At any rate, a thread from a year ago might be very useful and worth "reading first". This one is just 6th on the current page: http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/2/11729 Ignore the meager guidelines the community has made (and I try to uphold) if you must, but don't try to make sport of me for doing what has been asked of me. I accept your apology, even if I don't buy the "light hearted" premise.
-Anyway-
Have you run a tracer? You might be behind Cogent, in which case there's not much that can be done short of harassing Cogent. Also I'd shut down any FireFox or other internet-related apps when playing VO.
While your graphics card isn't going to impact your ping, the MX is not a real powerhouse. You might consider turning down your VO graphics and video settings to see if you can't pick up some improvement in FPS. You might also make sure you have the most recent driver, though I doubt that will make a big difference given that you are running Win2K. I can't imagine that you would need Vista for VO...or anything really.

"Perhaps you are attributing other people's posts to me?" Could well be the case. I'm sorry I have offended you so badly Whistler, I'll not poke at you in the future.
That being said I took your advise and ran a traceroute to see if I'm behind cognet and look at that 6 hops through cogent:

I should point out that I overlooked that thread because it dealt with high pings, currently my ping is 95.1 according to /ping in vo
Also i ran a traceroute to the test server and found that i'm not behind cogent when going to the test server where now that i think about it I've had no troubles.
As for the gfx settings, I had them at near the absolute lowest. the skybox had the texture of a disco ball viewed from the inside. So I messed with the settings and found that somehow even the default 128mb settings were faster (earlier trying to do BP i was into the single digits until there was incoming fire, then it was maybe 10 frames per MINUTE) and the 32mb settings seemed a bit faster yet with no discernible change in image quality, possibly because I see in color about as good as a cat and my monitor is all smudged up.

Tried different renderers dx8 or opengl?
Checked task manager if there's anything running in the background?
Uhm ..err really tried to close all firefox windows? just a flash banner can still eat serious cpu time
Check your display settings if you have forced fsaa on or something. try with your desktop in 16bit mode.
That's all I can think of..
I used to play on a 1.3 ghz athlon with 384 mb ram and a geforce 2 mx and it was very playable at medium to high settings. that was under linux though.
