It seems when I stop playing one person and go back to the log in menu to switch to another person, the character loading screen is hanging up; won't load. I can't play without shutting everything down and starting over from desk top.

This is a problem with selecting your char the FIRST time too. Instead I just hit cancel and retype password until it works.

One thing that works for me is to select another pilot (just click on one) and then go back to the one I want to use.
