It's not a bug, but a feature.
1) Press turbo [TAB] button. Don't relase
2) Press [SHIFT]. Don't release
3) Release [TAB]
4) Release [SHIFT]
Now you have turbo engines on until you press [TAB] again.
Very useful for me.

do it with caps lock, tis' the same thing :) it works for ANY key that is a letter.
does it also prevent the game from turning turbo off on you at random? 'cause that woulkd be welcome...
How do you mean, "turning turbo off at random"? The only times I've had turbo end were when I ran out of energy or hit a key I had bound to turn turbo off.
If you mean turning off turbo when you use tab complete to fill in someone's name in chat, there's a simple solution:
Change Turbo to a key other than Tab.
The "Shift lock" trick for turbo makes the game forget to turn off turbo when the key is released. Basically, it sees "Tab Key Pressed", but then it sees "Shift+Tab Released" which is a completely different key according to VO. Or at least that's my understanding of how the binds in this instance seem to work. I remember this trick working on my Linux box. Not sure if it worked on my Mac, so it probably also depends on how the keyboard events are passed to the game as well.
