Adv. Gatling turret
For excellent auto-targetting and a price tag more than most - fully tricked out- ships, it sure doesn't seem to -hit- anything much. :)
No, but it provides a decent spread just in case your dead-on autoaim is being outsmarted by a strafing opponent. You may actually be more likely to hit the harder bots in 12 with a gatling turret than with a railgun, at least at a >200m range.
They should definitely be stronger. Mainly because it makes a great defensive weapon on heavies. Right now they're a tad too weak to fend off pirates. It should force fighters to fight heavies from a long or moderate range. Everything else about it is perfect though.
I like to keep at least one on my freighters, even if I can't kill anyone with it. Henshaw attacked me with one, and I go by the principle that it scares people off so I survive. (I sure ran when Henshaw fired on me.)
Some people online still felt skeptical as to whether the advanced gatling gun was still balanced or not. Sorry if I'm repeating myself here, but I'd just like to elaborate on a few points.
Ships equipped with advanced gatling guns absolutely cannot boost and shoot at the same time. This is the disadvantage to it. This is what prevents it from being the ultimate offensive weapon. It's because of the fast energy drain. This effect also kind of gives the effect that the gatling gun has an appropriate cooling spindown effect to prevent overheating. So you'll actually have to fire in momentary bursts, even if you're in close quarter battles.
The aimbot AI for the turret right now is perfect. Hard, yes, but only at a very close range. To those people who are whining about not being able to dodge it, BACK OFF. That's the gatling gun doing its job. That's what it's supposed to do. You'll see that when you back off and dodge a little, you won't get hit as much! And like I said before, it just needs to be slightly stronger to provide a better defensive role. Maybe then we'll finally see pirates thinking twice about engaging heavy ships like it's nothing.
For those who are still skeptical, I urge you to buy a heavy ship and load it with the advanced gatling gun. Then tell me whether it's easy to boost and fire with it simultaneously, let alone aim with it at a very long range. Oh, and give it a shot against the Valkyrie ship. You'll be hitting that thing thousands of times, but you'll only be putting the slightest dent on its hull. Gotta up that strength. Can't put enough emphasis on that.

I slapped 2 on a heavy freighter. It was truly awesome against standard bots, and not as good as my own aim against the smarter bots. It scared some off a would-be pirate, but failed against the multiple-railgun type pirates who were able to snipe from a distance. I don't think the aim is an issue given the manueverability of targets, but I agree that making a it a little stronger would be helpful.
