Combat XP for PvP
Because of my levels, I'm at a real disadvantage when it comes to gaining/losing combat xp from PvP. I'm not sure how the xp is determined, but I recieve NO xp for any players that I kill, and loose MASSIVE xp for killing someone less than cl 4.
I would like to now how xp gain/loss is determined.

How can you lose xp for killing anybody else than a newb? o.O
Sounds like someone power leveled too quickly! Heheh, sorry. Anyway, that's the reason why I stick to minimum XP levels for all my favorite equipment. It makes things so much easier in the long run. I especially love targeting and killing players who leveled so quickly that they can't even handle the ships they have access to. It's amusing to watch them squirm into something they're not used to.
The whole XP system is a mess, IMO. Something needs to be done to test true skill, rather than rewarding players who kill the same types of bots over and over by finding a way to outsmart the repetitive AI. If you can kill a dozen or so TyCorps without taking a single hit, couldn't one assume that you could kill a trillion more the same way? What difference does it make, right? Why drag the player on to boredom like that?
Here's what I was thinking for combat missions. A dozen kills for each bot type, without repairing or leaving the sector. You could maybe level up that way. Kill 12 Orun Collectors, get a level 2 license. Kill 12 Denteks, get a level 3 license. Kill 12 Tycorps, get a level 4 license... etc. etc. etc. I don't know, that makes more sense to me, than to require hundreds of kills.
For the later missions, when you've run out of bot types, maybe a string of combat tasks can be assigned to each player. If they can complete each one without dying they'll get the license. Simple and to the point. And it tests skill and it doesn't require hours of boring botting within the same sectors.

@ Sun Tzu: I said I get NO xp, not LOOSE xp for killing anyone but a n00b, and that I loose MASSIVE xp for killing a n00b.
@ Arolte: I didn't powerlevel, and I didn't say ANYTHING about not being able to handle my ships. And I have to say I disagree with your idea, it'd make getting licenses too easy.
Anyway all I'm asking is how the system of xp gain from PvP works, from what I can tell you only get xp for people around/higher leveled than you are and the higher you are the more xp you loose when killing a n00b.

Why should getting licenses be hard? If you have the skills to do something, why should there be an unnecessary or tedious wait to have access to the things you can handle well? That's not how it was when you got your driver's license, was it? They didn't make you wait over an arbitrary period of time or require you to drive for thousands of hours on the streets before you could even take your first test, did they? Not at all. The tests are there to see whether you qualify or not.
Licensing in Vendetta should be a way of preparing players for combat, not as some sort of artificial barrier that would prevent players from getting access to the best equipment. At least IMO. Better equipment can also be reserved for those who have good standing with all the various factions that are out there, so it won't always be about getting the highest licenses and whatnot. A dedicated trader who knows little about combat will also be able to defend themselves also, as a result.
But anyway, I didn't mean to veer off topic or anything. This discussion isn't really about bugs either. It's more like an inquiry as to how the current system works. And I just thought I'd offer suggestions to make it better. And sorry if it sounded like I was making false accusations. I was just toying around with you. But I do know for a fact that there are power levelers out there who find ways of gaining enormous XP within hours. Ahh well...

Heh, actually when I got my drivers license, they did make me wait an arbitrary amount of time (minimum age requirement), and drive for a specified number of hours (thankfully much fewer than thousands. IIRC it was around 20 hours of driving time on a highly restricted "Learner's Permit").
But anyway, this is the border between the twitch-based FPS & RPG genres. Personally, I would have a slight preference to the RPG way of doing things, where gaining license levels requires a fairly significant time investment doing missions. The reason I would prefer that is because the time invested in doing the missions should qualify as time having fun, and therefore the more time it takes, the more fun we have. Up until now missions haven't been as fun as I might have liked, but as the mission editor nears completion I expect that to change.

Well Dragon my levels are 13/14/14/13/11.
In PvP I usually get from +50 to +300xp, ummm ...depending on who I fight.
If you get no xp, heh, go for higher lvld and better fighters, youll get your xp points.

Yeah, as far as I am aware, its not just xp or levels that counts towards the xp given for a player kill, but also the amount of kills they have, maybe deaths are figured in too but I doubt it.
At levels 9/13/11 yodaofborg gives out around 300 XP to most players, around 200xp to mr bojan, who actually has higher levels than me, but I have more kills than him, mr_spuck gives yodaofborg +300 xp, and has simaler levels, but a hell of a lot more bot kills. Unknown player node only gives out small xp bonuses to mr bojan, and he is 12/14/13, but with nowhere near as many kills as yodaofborg.
That makes it as confusing as hell when trying to work out who I should get xp from, but as far as I know, the XP loss stops at level 3 (not just combat, iirc, trade 4 will also stop the loss) and if you think 1100xp is a lot? Don't look into making millions from the currently as borked bounty system. =D
[Edit]
You should be aware that anyone killing anyone below a level 4 combat/trade will recieve a xp hit if they are above level 4, its supposed to stop us pirate types picking on the lil fish.

And we know how well that works to protect the little fish.
Yoda has pointed out some important parts to the XP calculations. In a skill focused game you shouldn't use a simple "does the killer have higher licenses than the dead pilot?" formula to determine XP. The number of PKs and bot kills should also be considered and possibly other factors.

O.o... yodaofborg that's mind boggling...
Looking at who I've been killing recently, I think I can understand what you're saying. The people I fight are generally lower leveled, don't have many pk kills, and all that stuff, and I usually end up in duels for those that do have high levels and hundreds of pk kills and thus I don't get any xp reward for them.
When a n00b attacked me I killed him in my self-defense, (forgetting about the protection thingy, which should be taken away when we're in grey space, which we were) and lost 1700 combat xp. Now I know to just ignore n00bs :)
