First impressions

Hey all, I just starting playing, probably 2 hours total now. I've got two issues that I'd like to point out and get people's feedback on.

The first is the mouse movement. It floats around doing smooth accelerations and decelerations which makes it unusable for me. I've found some keyboard shortcuts for things but I find it really hard to hit the buttons.

The second is the frame rates go down a little when you're looking at a station up close. This makes it tough to do fine course corrections when docking.

What does everyone else think about these? Is it just me?

If your framerate is low in the station interface that can cause the mouse to be less than ideally responsive. Try turning off "Show Station in Menu"

What hardware are you playing on?

The mouse movement is normal and is part of the way the flight model works. There is a difference btween your heading (indicated by the blue circle on your HUD) and the direction your camera is looking. It takes a moment (especially in the free ship you are flying) for the nose to catch up with the view. You can turn off mouselook using ";" to pin the view to the nose. I find it more convenient to keep mouslelook on so I can choose my target more quickly and so I can look around, but then I'm used to how it works.

It is normal for your FPS to go down (in any game)when looking at something with a higher poly count, but usually this isn't enough to impact docking. On my system, which is a few years old, I have no notable change in performance. You might want to have a look at your video settings within the game and experiement with turning down some of the settings a little.

The mouse issue is only a problem for me in station because I use a flightstick in space. The problem lies in hitting buttons in the station UI. I just don't have the fine control to stop on them. I have no idea about targetting etc. because, again, I'm using a flightstick in space.

As for framerate while docking, yeah now I recall that the graphics settings all defaulted to maximums. I'll play with that tonight.

And my hardware is something like two years old but not underpowered, expecially considering this game is not graphics intensive ( which is not meant as an insult ).

Ah, it sounds like DirectX (you are using Windows, right?) is rendering too many frames ahead which "lags" your mouse cursor. Try enabling VSync in the video options menu. And maybe update your nvidia video drivers if you haven't.

Also, since you're using a Geforce 3, I suggest you go to the Graphics options and turn off "Show Station in Menu". That will make the station menus much more usable.

So turning off the station background when in-station fixed my mouse movement issue. I'm still playing with graphics settings for the docking problem.
