OK..... now what I said (where did my hostile on watertower post go? :( )

The M4A1 Carbine uses the same round as the M16.. it's just that, a carbine (shorter barrel and stock, full-automatic feature).

I was talking about this to Toshiro in-game, and he pointed out that you can only get the gun as silent as its mechanism, so there's a limit of how quiet you can get. For a completely silent take-down, try a bow, knife, ninja stars, something like that (hoping the guy doesn't scream, if he does, use a knife from behind while you cup his mouth).

The gun he was talking about is the XM82A1 (XM means experimental). It is a .50 cal BMG round. It's an anti-materiel weapon (marteriel means equipment related to military uses). In Iraq a sniper team had it, and the platoon leader spotted a hostile on a water tower over 800 meters away with an RPG. He called up his sniper with the XM82A1, and the entire platoon watched as the round sawed the guy in half, and his upper torso fell out of the watertower. Talk about a morale booster! The civilian .50 really has no use except for bragging rights. Want bear hunting? It's easier to go get a .410 or a .480 than a .50, not to mention less expensive and less bulky. But still, I'd fear the man on my block that has a .50.

For that low cost, high power solution...

Choose the .50 hand cannon!

Urza, you should make your own rockets! I'm not sure if you're allowed to use metal fuselages and nose cones any more, though... :|

Pyro, i think i posted about that in SF's forum a looong time ago.....

Camps.. HAHAHAH.. does the XM82A1 have a special .50 cal round? I cant see how it could be any better than the others except possibly more accurate, and it's a proven fact that today's .50 cal sniper rifles are accurate to well over 1000 yards.

As for hunting with 1.. The rounds are roughly $2 a shot, so it wouldn't really be worth it.

As for killing with a bow.. Well, how effective is a broad head against kevlar?

But then again, i assume you're trying to be silent, so you'd be going for head/neck shots. But where is the kill zone on a human with a bow for 1 shot takedowns that sren't increadbly messy?

for truely silent kills.. fiber wire. They cant scream or anything. (for those of you who are wondering.. It's the stuff Delta Team uses in Black Hawk Down to get the guys on the truck with the mounted cannon thingy)

As for Daon.. you'd be refering to the Desert Eagle, chambered for a .50 cal round, wouldn't you? I've check them out, and that is 1 big hand gun. Way to bulky to be of much use where you'd want to be able to pull it out and start firing. I'd much rather have a Glock or a Barreta M-9. 9 millameter, yes. But much easier to use.

Actually, a broad head probably could slice through body armour. Not only that, but since it's a highly accurate weapon (if well made), you can go for neck shots anyhow.

maybe. i heard somewhere a knife can penitrate body armor.

As for accurate... well. not quite. Maybe more accurate than a hand gun, but no where near as good as a rifle after around 50 meters.

He's referring to the Israeli Military Industries' (IMI) Desert Eagle magnum. It's chambered in .357, .44, and .50 AE.

I have a replica of it, and it is a HUGE gun. Cannon is a good way to describe it.

Ah yes, fiberwire, good stuff. :-D

And yes, you can get competition grade .50's, which is basically a must over 1000 yards.

hmmm... the only pistols i'd use would be the CZ75, the SIG P210 or the Seburo Bobson...
btw, a knife can penetrate body armour, yes. if there are two layers of titanium foil integrated, it cannot. (one to hold off the knife and the other as a backup)

Give me a Colt .45 ACP, or the HK Mark23. Both very nice weapons. If auto-loading isn't your thing, try a .357 mag--they actually have more force than a .45 round.

I'm still wondering camps, what is the difference between the XM82A1 and any other .50 cal sniper rifle?
Sep 20, 2003 SirCamps link
The Army and Marines both have their own version with minor changes, I've since forgotten them, but I'll go dig up past issues of American Rifleman if everyone's curious.

what do you need any other sniper rifle besides the AI L96?
Sep 20, 2003 Arolte link
What? Nobody mentioned Fabrique Nationale? Those crazy Belgians know how to make guns. Most (if not all) of their guns use the 5.7mm SS190 round, which is totally capable of piercing armor. You also feel less recoil than the 9mm parabellum because of its size. The FN FiveSeven handgun uses 20 of these per round. TWENTY for a handgun. The FN P90 has fifty rounds per clip, almost twice the quantity of any standard SMG or AR capacity. And although we're talking pistols and SMGs here, they're just as deadly (if not more deadlier) than ARs. The only drawback is range, of course.

The Barrett M82A1 (or XM82A1) has semi-automatic capabilities and also utilizes various mechanisms to reduce recoil drastically. Most .50 cal sniper rifles are bolt-action and share a traditional design that offers little or no reduction in recoil.

For example, the M82A1 has a distinct chevron muzzle brake that effectively channels the concussion out and back away from the barrel. You'll see this nifty feature at the end of the barrel, as a sort of flat and horizontal protrusion. The barrel itself also acts as a shock absorber, sort of bouncing back the moment the rifle is fired, acting as a kind of spring to give way without applying too much pressure to the user's shoulder.

Many other .50 cal sniper rifles are simply regular rifles with a scope, but allows for .50 cal rounds to be chambered. The M82A1 takes it a step further and makes firing .50 cal rounds more bearable. From what I've heard they're still heavy as hell and contain a lot of moving parts. They're also not practical for human targets, but rather armored vehicles and buildings. So you're not going to see many of 'em around on the battlefield.

about smgs and ars: at some point, you wonder if it is still an smg or an ar or vice versa (take the steyr aug for example)
i don't know, has anyone of you ever heard of seburo (imaginary weapons manufacturer)? i wonder if those weapons were possible...

What's the point of a bolt-loading gun when you can have magazine-loading?
