Obama wins nobel prize, but for what?

Does anybody have the slightest clue what the hell he won this for? Are they giving them out in the cracker jack box now? He hasn't accomplished squat, other than selling out our polish allies to the Russians so GE (who owns msnbc) can gain access to Russia. Oh that's right, the stimulus bill, so wonderful that unemployment hasn't gone over 8%. Hey at least he has school children worshiping him, that's a new one for a US president.

your anger seems a little misdirected lnh he didn't choose to win the prize.

http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761567175/Nobel_Prizes.html "In his will, Nobel directed that most of his fortune be invested to form a fund, the interest of which was to be distributed annually 'in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind.' He stipulated that the interest be divided into five equal parts, each to be awarded to the person who made the most important contribution in one of five different fields.
In addition to the three scientific awards and the literature award, a prize would go to the person who had done 'the most or the best work for fraternity among nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.' Nobel also specified certain institutions that would select the prizewinners. The will indicated that “no consideration whatever shall be given to the nationality of the candidates, but that the most worthy shall receive the prize.” "

That's what the Foundation had to work with. Apparently Obama was nominated shortly after the election, as the deadline was February 1. I don't think anyone, Obama included, has said that he has done enough to deserve the prize. The Foundation is quoted as saying that they wished to promote Obama's promises and efforts toward peace. If anything, it put quite a bit of pressure on him and probably didn't do him any favors.

i never said he chose to win it. im simply wondering what he did to deserve it, there were others who were nominated too.

This thread is flamebait. That's all I'm going to say.

Obama accepting the prize as a "call to action" is like Einstein winning the Nobel Prize in Physics and saying "maybe now I should apply to college!"

By the way, no hands, the Peace Prize has been a joke since the day they nominated Carter. It is only fitting they'd give it to Carter, Jr.

<sigh>

Perhaps the award will work "in reverse", so to speak.

As in, now Obama has something that he'd damn well better live up to, since it's apparent to everyone except the Nobel Committee that he doesn't deserve it.

I'd rather he got this joke of a prize for nothing than try to live up to it now. He's a disaster enough as it is, why incentivize him?

Actually, it's been a joke since Arafat won.

Mostly he got it for not being George Bush...

I think it's probably more embarrassing than anything else for Obama. I'm sure he realizes just as well as everyone else that he hasn't come close to following through on all his promises.

Personally, I appreciate the selection... at the very least because it shows international community still thinks we made the right choice with Obama.

heh i hadent thought of that pc

and smittens, i dont give a snails fart what the international community thinks, hell i dont care what most in this country think.

You guys are just being silly. Next year, he'll get both the Nobel prize for medicine for his work on reforming the US health care system AND a second peace prize for his upcoming work on immigration. We should be grateful to have such a distinguished man leading the US, nay the World. Everyone should completely disregard the fact that the already bankrupt country is being run even further into debt or that incompetence and corruption are being rewarded, nor that the presidency is being turned into a personality cult where children are being taught to sing the praises of Obama. Besides, winning the Nobel Peace prize pales in comparison to this fine recommendation...

"NEW YORK — Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, declaring that "we'd be content and happy if Obama can stay president forever," "

Haha, nice, Fluffy. And good point, Lecter, I forgot Arafat won. Here's something Obama could have done to restore the integrity of the Nobel Peace Prize and boost America's respect for its Kenyan dictator: He could have said, "I haven't done anything yet, and so for now I will decline this prize. If, after my presidency is over in either four or eight years, the committee still finds me deserving of this prize, I will accept it then, but not before. Judge me on my actions, not my intentions, and if I can truly bring nations together and promote peace, then I will have earned this prize." But we know that Barack Hussein Mugabe Carter Stalin Obama's "presidency" is all about him, because he's embarrassed by the country that elected him to be its leader. And that's really why he won the prize, by being the first truly anti-American President of the United States of America. The rest of the world really likes that.

anyone intelligent enough to get into Harvard from the background he faced would be rightly embarrassed but the pea-brained, gullible idiots that are showing up in this thread. God bless the man for being optimistic enough to think that your kind is worth saving, or even possible to save. your America-- that Obama is so against-- is a cancer to the world.
Oct 11, 2009 Death Fluffy link
By "intelligent enough to get into Harvard from the background he faced" I'm sure you mean politically active middle class with the "disadvantage" of having to experience other cultures during his childhood in an age high on affirmative action?

edit, ok you had one other post, interesting that you are either too lazy to post in the forum at all, or you feel the need to hide behind a forum alt

TurnTable, "our America" has saved the world's bacon -- and continues to do so -- many times over. Trust us, we'd have been just fine economically trading with a Nazi dominated Europe, and I still wonder why we provide hundreds of millions of dollars a year in food aid to countries (such as North Korea) that hate us... let their peasants starve enough, and maybe they'd revolt against their governments.

In sum, fuck off and die: "your world" is able to be as "progressive" and self-righteous as it is because of "our America."
Oct 12, 2009 TurnTable link
ooohhhh sorry I wasn't clear. by "your America" I wasn't referring to those that get things done. "your America" means the America led by these kind of people. the "way right" who refuses to act or speak sensibly, who are too insane or corrupt to look past their own dreamt-up issues and make progress.

there's nothing wrong with a Republican, the problem is the liars and hate-mongers and the retards who believe them.

hands, i'll give you a cookie if you know my irc name :P

fluffy: i bet you really think you would have been able to get into Harvard if you were black haahahahha
