Larger truckin companies usually have great benefits packages.. Just they also expect a minimum of 2 weeks out before ya come home for a couple of days...
The following companies will train fresh drivers:
Swift Transportation www.swifttrans.com 800-2SWIFT2 - (who I started with, my favorite "starter" company)
Schneider Transportation www.schneider.com
J.B. Hunt www.jbhunt.com
Knight Transportation www.knighttransportation.com
(not sure about the last one)
Just remember, ya gotta put "your dues in" before you get the good routes etc, good home time.. etc etc..
If you have a year or two of experience, with no problems on your MVR, you can pretty much go to any company and walk right into a good route.. Keep that in mind..

Break19: I just might... but I still need someone to buy my shit!
following 2 more simultaneous catastrophic drive failures, the PC is out of commission once again, but will go for half price as-is!
still unemployed, no hits... I want to move to palo alto to hit up the job market there, but can only afford a one-way trip taking everything with me.

You could sell all of your winter gear while you're at it. It has been in the upper 60's all week.
Have you researched the cost of living out here, though? The SF Bay Area is not a great place to be if you are short of cash.

I'm working on that, Whistler.
And not selling the gear until I'm ready to move. haha.
Once I get an in on a decent paying job, I may be able to do it... unfortunately, down payment and deposit on a studio or even a shared apartment is going to be more than I have in cash unless I can sell some of my things before I go.

Well, just make sure you come with your eyes open. Here's a good gateway to a lot of resources

We also make heavy use of craigslist around here. The jobs listings are of primary interest, but note the free listings - sometimes there's amazing stuff for free or cheap.

Wow... Kinda wished I had spotted this thread earlier. Still got that MacBook?
I've got two cousins up in that area, I'll forward them the link!
Good luck making it through these tough times!

Verad: I do, however due to catastrophic failure on the main PC system, it's currently the only one I have, and I'll need it for at least a little while longer now.
Well keep me posted. I've got a big chunk of change coming back from uncle Sam in the next week or two and a new laptop is definitely on the agenda.
