Secondly... I'd never base my liking or not liking someone on something as non-essential as politics.

And, that's martial (of or relating to the military or war) not marital (of or relating to marriage)... I'd probably agree with you just fine on marital issues. (and let's not go there... since it'll probably devolve into a discussion of gay marriage... which I do not support... though I do support the legal equivalent. (i.e. civil unions))
