Bah. Ignore vIsitor.
I find most of Lecter's and genka's posts rather entertaining. If you came here for carebear hand-holding, yer outta luck. Unless it's genka's time of the month, when she'll happily snuggle with anyone.
The verbal sparring on the forums is sometimes more entertaining than the ingame sparring, to be honest.

Oh, and thats Leebs, the VO Drunk™. Depending on his level of inebriation, his advice can range from moderately sensible, to completely insane. In his case, make a peace offering of Tequila, and back away slowly.

Was there a Phantom Tollbooth reference?
There was. Great book.

And don't forget to ignore Roda. He is an ass.
Lecter is a no name lawyer irl. He trolls the forums and even trolls ingame sometimes. Despite actually having some pvp skill, that just doesn't flip his switch anymore, so he hung up his blasters and just trolls. Pretty much a non entity nowadays.
Genka on the other hand never did have any pvp skill that I have ever detected. pretty much a non entity to begin with.
If you want to role play a miner, that is cool. Jump in game and play. Find out who the other miners are, and see who you want to team up with. There is a bonus to mining in a group, so knowing what miners to ally with could be a big bonus.
But whatever you do, expect conflict. This game has a certain flexibility in play style, and that attracts all sorts, including the "evil" sort.
If you want voice chat, start a server.
and allow me to advise you now (since many relevant guild try to hide this fact), I am at war with pa, itan, vpr, clm. I sometimes patrol grey, and am often guarding the latos/sedina trade lane. I recommend you avoid joining these guilds, if you have any intention of traversing my domain on a regular basis.

To clear up: I've indeed ditched the guns, though only because the truth of the first sentence (yes, even huge name firms are populated by us no name associates) has led to my having also ditched all personal computers and home internet connections, too. They tell me my account is paid through 2009-10-31, though, so maybe I'll play again one day. Ha.
The forums, however, offer a way to occasionally keep a hand in from the office, in between crises.

<--is in Itan, and regularly flys through "Roda's space" (Note: And also occasionally receives free trips back to his home station from Roda too! See! He's not so bad!)
That being said, you can go by the rest of his good post. And if you are looking for a mining/trading guild, you could also look into TGFT.
I'd also say that this statement: "But whatever you do, expect conflict. This game has a certain flexibility in play style, and that attracts all sorts, including the "evil" sort." applies to both in-game, and on the forms.

Also keep in mind that although Roda talks a good game, he can be killed just like any other player. And he's a lone wolf, so killing him does not earn you the ire of an entire guild. Traversing any spot where Roda may currently be is not a problem.
But I'd agree with el Mojo here, if yer lookin for a bunch of miners & traders, there's no other place to look than TGFT. Tell Broma I said "hi."
