Fiber Splice Today

It looks like the game (and website) will be going down at some point today, hopefully only for a half hour or so, due to a fiber splice at our colo (ISP).

And the main tool used during the procedure will be one of these:

Now now ;). Not true.

What's a Fiber Splice (says the computer illiterate player).

I have an idea that it's your isp changing their cables or something. Splicing them... making 1 into 2
Splice: { -<= }

How far off am I?

You cut a optical fibre and join it to another fibre.

Usually you use a nice splicing machine, which will heat up both ends of the splice to merge them.

But, if you are in a hurry (like having 1 M customers killing you if you don't), you can use a cigarette lighter....

nice..

Incarnate, no redundant connection? ;-)

Splicing machine heats up both ends, huh?

If someone lets the gas build up in that garbage truck, and the compaction mechanism exerts enough pressure on the lines... *grin*

Our colo has been through some changes lately, and there isn't a redundant connection right now. Regardless, even if there were, there'd be a bit of a BGP flap as the routing changed (although maybe 30 seconds instead of 30 minutes). In any event, we're hopeful that it will all go smoothly.

If it doesn't, it'll be obvious ;).

And... we're back!
Mar 11, 2005 incarnate link
Yup, seems to be all good. Cogent connection looks pretty decent thus far.

Just out of curriosity, what kind of connection do you guys have?

How fast?

Go Genka!!!

(Can't stop laughing long enough to think of a clever post)

Edit: Shouldn't it be Serco red insted of UIT yellow? :-p

More like this one...

and its a front end loader too. :-)

100mbit.
Mar 12, 2005 macguy link
I assume it's 100Mbit full duplex right? And 100mbit is really only 50 megabytes a second. Or am i converting wrong?
Mar 12, 2005 V'Shjaar link
Hi guys - this should help with your bit converstion queries:

http://www.theloopagency.com/bitrates.html

Hence a 100Mbps (is Megabits per second NOT MB MegaBytes per second) is (if theoretical max) only 12.5MBps (100/8)
Mar 12, 2005 macguy link
Umm, how do they run vendetta on such a slow connection?
Mar 12, 2005 KixKizzle link
100 megabits is fast. he probably meant megabyte. or...

i'm mixed up now.

The only thing that matters is the upload anyway.

100mbit = roughly 10MB/sec iirc
