Hello everyone. I have created a "rough draft" of a Vendetta-Online movie. There are some errors (cursor showing) and some screen jumpiness when my capture software got a little laggy, but otherwise it is proceeding nicely. The footage was taken the week of March 1st, 2005.

Here's the link. The movie is 8MB, in Quicktime format, 320 X 240 resolution. It will stream as long as the server is handling the load. Or you can download it for posterity.

Comments/Critiques/Flames gladly accepted.

Oh, all footage is Copyright © 1997-2005 by Guild Software. Soundtrack for non-commercial use is Copyright © by Juno Reactor & TVT Soundtrax. All Rights Reserved.

BTW MGI, I really like the "Carmina Burana" soundtrack. A bit cliché, (just a bit) but still quite cool. Obviously we need to take more stills to fill out the visuals.

You & I need to get together and when the capital ship comes out, We'll film that and put it to Star Wars' "Imperial March" like the scene in Empire Strikes Back where you see the Super-Destroyer for the first time.

As long as tramshed doesn't swoop in and kill the director like last night...

Many thanks to V'Shjaar for the webhosting. My host is being flaky, apparently they have a problem with a "malicious script" that's running on the servers. Hope they don't mean my Movie! I mean, the script's not THAT bad...

That's pretty cool lebermac. But that last link isn't working.

One really useful tip to get good scenes shot...

Get skype http://www.skype.com and conference call your Vactors (Virtual Actors) then you can position them more easily for good dramatic action.

Another tip - watch some manga or starwars - look at how a sequence is cut - fast shots with not too much repetitiveness - don't be fooled into thinking more is better - if you need to cut the sequence fast paced then you will need to get loads of footage - make a list of all the shots you need and storyboard a sequence and try to film it according to a plan.

You can upload a shooting script to the webspace I gave you for your vactors to read/look at so they get a better understanding of whats needed before you start organising a time to meet for filming - this will save time actually online explaining it and you can get on with the fun part.

I really can't say much exceptional or amazing in your video, Leber. We see that stuff all the time. Try setting up something that you don't see too often, that otherwise we'd never see in VO.

P.S.: I like how the mouse is showing in part of the movie.

Lebermac: excellent job, beautifully choreographed.

Fnugget: are you kiddin? its great to be in a fight like that, but just be able to watch. I thought it was nice

Lebermac: good job, I love the music, and you've got some neat fights in there.

I also *love* the shots of zooming in toward the station dock from a distance.

Some of the cuts are a little long (the action sequences should be about 1/3 their current length imho, you'd need more material and lots of different shots for this to work).. but I understand its just a rough draft. How about putting in some shots of different ships you don't see as often like the Atlas, the Ragnarok, and the Behemoth? It would also be nice to get the cap ship in there when it comes out ;)

Let me know if you ever need me to help with anything while I'm online. I'm Phaserlight ig also.

Well, iunno. The movie didn't say anything special to me. It's like, hey, someone recorded a fight...

My favorite right now is CP's CTC video, despite all the HUD. There's some really nice movement there. The song has variety, which allows for different type of shots. There's points of high and low activity. This song keeps on going, so it would make more sense if it was entirely one fight, which it isn't. Phaser sort of points this out by suggesting more material. It's just required to be that way due to the constant high tempo of the music. Also, a big thing for me, the CTC video shows some progression or story. Something this movie, just sort of lacks. However, (stops criticizing) there's some good shots too. I like seeing that one pilot being chased, and having the guns arc as they are shot at him, which looks nice from a side view.

If anyone wants to host, i have a video. Just a bunch of shots put together; I don't like it as a movie, but there's some shots in there that are worth looking at.

Fnugget - email me and i'll send you the details of the ftp - i'll set up http://vendetta.crawl-forever.com

We can host all the movies you peepl want to make - I need to do some recording over the next 2 weeks - I'll try to do a little advert for Vendetta first off - in the meantime if any of you fancy yourselves as script writers - post your ideas here and we'll arrange to make them - complete with voice over (ship to ship comms) and LOTS of dramatic footage!!!

Fnugget: the HUD shot were there on purpose.

Lebermac: it's a good start, I think. I dunno, the music was too fast paced for what you were showing - the first half is a single bot fight and lots of long duration shots of stations. Lots of cool stations, mind you, but I think just one of them would have been fine.

The duel bits were up to the pace of the music, but the trouble is the resolution was too low, and there were too many artifacts to really make things out. The baddies were so far away you could really only see the targeting box. You have to pick someone with a different colored vulture, I think.

The music was fun, but for some reason I kept wanting to shout "MORTAL KOMBAT!!!" while watching it. Ah... No wonder... it was the Scorpion theme from the movie, wasn't it (or at least, that's what this mp3 I have is named).

If you want to create a "story" for your video, you need to put a lot of prep work into it. That's the only downside. For one, you need to know exactly what story you're telling, and then you need to know the timing of the shots. This'll give you an idea of exactly how many shots you're going to need. At that point you play and play and play and play, trying to get close to the shots that you want, making changes to the story as you go, cuz you find out that it's impossible to get all the parties to do exactly what you wanted them to do. As you're getting the shots, you have to scribble really quickly on your script which file to go searching through for the shot, cuz you'll find that it takes forever if you have lots of captures (which I did for the CtC video - about 3 or more hours worth of footage).

Aw heck... maybe I'll get online on Tuesday and shoot a lot of fighting footage. I've got a bunch of good music that'd go with fights that I doubt many of you've heard before (that's half the fun, you know, finding music that no one else has considered for battles - like the Halleluja Chorus in Evangelion)

Thanks for the feedback, especially Fnugget! (Yeah I got the damn cursor in there a couplea times.) The critical-criticism is the best kind. Can't learn otherwise! More unique shots, more action, a storyline. Got it.

I'm a graphic designer by trade and thought that in the course of doing some other videos for [IA] that I would make something a little more interesting. So in no way did I expect this to be super-professional, it was the work of someone who's using iMovie on his home iMac to make something -eh- semi-interesting.

Yeah, lots of shots are looong. I was trying to match some of the limited footage to the soundtrack. I picked the (yes you are right CP - track from Mortal Kombat CD ha ha) Juno reactor mix since it has that good opening "fadein", and a decent beat.
I had also considered Rammstein's Feuer Frei (the ...Bang...Bang parts would go great with explosions but I though the use of German language might throw a few people off), A mix of Rob Zombie's Electric Head pt 2 (which is kind of a generic lead-in), and even Monster Magnet's Space Lord (Which seemed like a great idea at first, but it was too slow, perhaps that song would work if I was following PickAxePete around... No offense Pete...)

There was no story to the video except "Here's some stuff that happened in Vendetta" But yeah, if there is a real video community project happening I am totally in for helping out. If we can get some video pros (or some machinima pros) that would be cool, if only for some of the ease of processing the video. V'Shjaar & CP - thanks!

I will make my next video to the tune of "Sponge Bob Square Pants" to make CP happy with an "unorthodox" choice of music.
