Avalon Torpedoes?

With the return of the venerable frigate, will Avalon Torpedoes also make a comeback so we can bomb it?

Hmmm, I wonder...

OOOOOH YES PWEEESE

:)

Right. I am *so* sure that Avalons will only be used on the frigate and that venerable old Vendetta tradition of station nuking will not make a comeback. (0.o)

Avalons as we new them were very ineffective against ships with large health compaired to the fighter craft all players use. They did very very little damage over 10 min especially compaired to something like a tach. Also they had a large blast radius which is useless when you're firing at a HUGE target.

If they make them mission specific and only able to be used in the exact sector the frigate is in there should be no problem with station nuking.
ie. sir-nuke-alot accepts mission to destroy serco frig, station updates and allows him to purchase an avalon torp, nuke-alot heads to space, accidently hits fire, gets an echo message saying "You are not permitted to use that weapon in this sector." but once he gets to the mission defined sector witht the frigate in it he can shoot those torps all his little heart pleases.

If they give large ships armor, avalons will become much more useful.

good god! are you guys noobs? Avalons where 20k. Avalons taken out cuz' of insa-nuking. you can't do that now (waste of money) if you station nuked, you'd get your butt kicked by the defs, so its safe to put it back in.
Dec 28, 2004 roguelazer link
Yeah, there should be no extra restrictions on the use of any weapon. If you've gotten your standing and levels high enough for an avalon, but are still stupid to fire one near a station, feel free. But maybe the defbots will attempt to block torpedoes by ramming them, thus foiling your plan?

Hee hee... "intercept the torpedo!"

Seriously tho, I think the faction system would handle any potential abuse. Perhaps Avalons should also only be made available to high level Itani, since they are the ones would would be bombing the frigate. If the Itani get a cap ship, then perhaps the Serco could get a string of missions which resulted in them stealing the Avalon Torpedo tech for themselves.
Dec 28, 2004 paedric link
Er.... *ONLY* give them to the Itani.... Hmmm... What a novel concept.

NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dec 28, 2004 Starfisher link
Since they would only be useful against the frigate, why the hell would the serco want them?

Hopefully the devs will modify the frigate model a little and give the changed on to the Itani. That way the mission would be mirrored for the Serco like CTC is now, and avalons would be available to all.

So we can intercept your avalons with ours

I must be missing something.

Why not make it CTF? Capture The Frig. X amount of ships from opposing team must dock in order to CTF.
Dec 29, 2004 toshiro link
For this to work, docking procedures would have to be changed, at least for the frig.
Maybe that you have to remain motionless during a set amount of time in front of the dock to have your ship's computer interface with the frig's or shtuph (insert other arbitrary technobabble explanation here).

And I agree, if nukes, everyone should have them... not just the Itani.

Im against any single weapon that is a one hit kill, we have enough missle and rocket spamming as it is.
Dec 29, 2004 KAos_nyrb link
Ah but avalon is one of those sweet weapons which makes all other weapons seem blinding quick :)

the avalon moves bout 20 / 30 ms, and it's prox ain't huge so it's a bugger to hit anything moving with it

"X amount of ships from opposing team must dock in order to CTF."

i'd make it a bit more complex than this: perhaps "Marines" could be a type of cargo available only at military stations, and in order to capture the frigate one side would need to deliver some large number of cargo units of marines (500? 800?) thus, the strategy would be for the attackers to escort cargo vessels (i'm thinking Atlases and Wraiths) to the frigate's docking bays.

or perhaps a single unit of marines would take up, say, 10 units of cargo space, in order to prevent people from trying to fly marines in using fighters. in that case, however, you'd want to reduce the target number of marines somewhat.

Hee hee, I can imagine a bunch of wee little guys running around in a glowing blue cube...:D. Though, I think this is a pretty good idea.

As for avalons...they sure were fun. And Tramshed, think about a bus. A stock bus. Now think about what its top speed is, not turboing. That's right--50 m/s. Now take that speed, and divide it in half. You now have the approximate speed of an avalon torpedo. The only thing they were REALLY fun for was the s13 End Of 3.3 War, where there were like 30 people, and at any given time 1 or 2 avalons going off on the station, and people losing valks and proms and other expensive ships at a great rate...:D.

These people I think are right when they say faction standing will take care of most potential abuse. And...if you WANT to become an enemy of the state, so to speak, Roguelazer's right, we shouldn't be restricted to do just that, if it is our wish.

(Hee hee hee, in my mind I can see a new weapon in the future employed by def bots...a magnetic field that allows them to tow the avalon launched at the station anywhere they choose -- and if they're willing to die for their country, so to speak, they run down the offender who shot it and detonate it close to them! Ha ha ha ha! Retribution! 8-))

Insta-nuking was fun too.
