I just destroyed a Serco in monitored Itani space who was presumably about to attack the itani convoy and I lost all Itani standing. I don't get it.
It takes so long to gain reputation only to lose it all on one kill. I had +880 standing and now I'm down to -40 or something. This just doesn't make sense.
Is it some sort of bug?

You have probably killed a NPC serco trader in a no-fire zone. The guards have told you to leave sector immediately to restore your standing with itani. I know this, I've had this happen to me a few times.
Nope. My standing is still negative and the Serco I destroyed was a player. This is a permanent faction hit.
It sucks because I can no longer buy any of the ships I normally buy. The effort to required for me to rebuild my faction standing is just too much...

Yeah, this is a problem, serco get good standing in itani space, and then use it to attack the convoy. The convoy loss in standing is minor, but to defend the convoy is impossible, for the reasons you just pointed out.
Realistically, would an itani government allow those who had proven themselves enemies to continue boosting their standing, just so that they could enter Itani space and attack again?
And the Devs really should fix _Ghost_ 's standing, he was acting as an itani, defending the convoy, for him to get that kind of a hit is absurd.

which is retarded
Minor convoy faction hits are unacceptable, killing a member of the convoy should result in crippled faction standing with that nation immediatly no questions asked as it is an act of war.
this would solve the sitting on the fence UIT problems and the problem you have just experienced witht hat serco player as anyone part of the CtC would be firmly locked on their side of the fight and would have to spend a week doing botting and cargo missions for that particular nation to even mildly repair their standing as it should be.

killed somone red (negative standing) should not decrease your faction standing.

I only play a couple hours a week. Since it would require that I complete like 100 missions to regain my faction standing, it just doesn't seem worth continuing with the game.
I won't comment about what morbid ways led to your drop of standing.
However, I'd like to remind you that national standing is increased from your botting missions as well.
Since you've already reached the valk once, I'd guess its not too hard for you to return to that, You'd barely have to reach another level in order to regain your standing drop.

*cough*
No. Wrong. Killing the convoy inside -guarded- space leads to a -significant- standing loss, enough to drop a weeks botting down to KOS again, and completly ruin my reputation.
yes, I decided to find this out myself, and I got dropped down to -800 in a single blow.

I haven't reached valk yet (nor will I ever).
I know that botting missions can increase your standing. However, it takes too long... more time than I'm willing to spend.

and this is why i dont think it should be possible to have positive reputation with both serco and itani.
The whole reputation system needs slightly reworked to prevent things like this.
A single point I would like to make is that the problem goes both ways. UIT and Itani can also build up enough positive reputation inside of serco space to attack the convoy there, making serco players choose to either take the same reputation hit, or let their convoy be destroyed.

hmm, from shape's post I was led to believe that you are "_ghost_" , I'm sorry if I misunderstood it.
As for that matter, I quite agree with Spellcast in this area. Making certain factions standing depend on eachother would be a fairly good thing.

hmm, I thought he was _Ghost_ too, guess he wasn't the only one...
Nope. I'm certainly not Ghost.
I guess I'm not the only one who is running into this bug. Of course, this bug tends to affect casual gamers more.
I hate refering to myself as a casual gamer, but my hardcore days are over these days.

What really annoys me is Serco pilots attacking me in a IDF Valk, I mean that is just wrong in so many ways.
enemies should cripple their standing...because they are ENEMIES!!!
Act of war faction standig loss i shall call it.
Shoot a convoy, be at war with opposing nation!
*puts foot down*

Durg: hehe, I'm actually quite amused by the thought of you being beaten up by the IDF valk. *g*

While I agree that defending a convoy in your faction's space seems to need some work, I'd hate to see the ability to gain standing with an opposing faction get nerfed because of it. While some Serco was attacking a convoy in Jallik, I was helping an Itani newbie in Eo. Not all Serco/Itani interaction has to do with CTC.
Also, with regard to the size of the faction decrease for hitting a convoy, I agree that doing it in monitored space deserves a big hit (they saw you do it), but I don't agree with big deceases in gray space. There's a reason there's gray space, and there's a reason the convoy starts there. It's a place where you can do what you want without always having to worry about the ramifications. It forces players to defend the convoys because your nation can't back you up (via a faction hit to the attacker). You are the only thing between saving the convoy and letting it get destroyed. Faction standing (with Itani & Serco) shouldn't be a factor.

The faction system is in obvious need of some tweaking. This is on The List. It should be possible to gain faction with "enemies", but it should be very difficult. More difficult than it has been, arguably.
We may need to do some judicial adjustment of existing character standings when we put changes into production. I'm also not opposed to fixing the standings of people who have fallen prey to this.

Count me in for the adjustment of existing characters. My only active Itani character is at -22. I'm sure you can see in the logs what he used to be at. Roughly around +870 or +880.
