incarnate just announced on another thread that the game will be available as download-only option and you only have to pay 10$ monthly-fee (so no damn shipping charges)
i think that is a really big step towards succes, and i can assure you all that i will get a discount by paying for 6 months in advance :)

The game engine is very close to what will be retail, the game content is not.
There is a whole set of missions that has not been activated. The levels are quite likely to be reworked for release, as too much stuff is availible too early. The missions will be more important to gaining equipment than the levels anyway according to the interviews that incarnate did over the past several months.
I will say this, all of the devs have ALWAYS been extremely careful not to promise anything they couldnt deliver. I dont see them starting to do that now, which tells me that the mission system, and as such the content, will be in place by release. (maybe only a day before release, possibly still a bit buggy, maybe not all trees will be availible right away; but it will be there.)

verdandi incident was certainly rp, but I'm not sure it fits appropriately in the category we're talking about...
generally, people rp ingame as a character, but verd's rp was so convincing that he began rping real life person instead of ingame char.
(for example... we start thinking an ingame terrorist character is really a terrorist in real life... =p)

When you think about it though, isn't that the ultimate goal of the roleplayer? True immersion? <G>.
Well, speaking as a true Vendetta Noob (<shudder> I hate that term applying to me) I have to say I hope the game is a monumental success. I didn't even know about it until a few days ago when I saw a link to the IGN VN board for VO; luckily I was bored at work and followed the links. I'd been praying for just such a game ever since the first Wing Commander game, and so far I haven't been disapointed. Frustrated at times such as getting repeatedly jumped and obliterated in a bloody ion storm, yes. But disapointed? Nope.
I think many of us are spoiled by the big name company MMORPGs that have come out. They've got the money for all the bells and whistles, yet still can't release a game without serious bugs. Yet VO, with it's small base of insane Devs(hey, they have to be insane to have stuck with it this long, right? <G>) has released, from my own experience, an extremely stable game.
Is there more to be done? Of course; but the dev's themselves have said that, and more importantly plan for the universe to grow and change. Perhaps one day we'll have player owned bases which will help propulgate guild wars. Who knows, maybe one day we'll even be able to step out of our ships and walk around in human avatars, or even explore worlds and bases on foot...<drooling>. Maybe not. But one thing is for sure, the devs done a great job so far, and I get the feeling they'll only do better.
