Pirating: A contrast in how the new crop are taking this reality

We'll see how the cargo mass thing impacts trader's ability to run. Right now, if I demand a cargo drop, the guy can just snicker and burn away. The extra time it takes for me to ask the question and wait for a response is plenty for the guy to get away in, even if he does nothing more than turn on the turbo.

Complete ambushes are going to be the most successful pirate tactic.

By the way, rechnically, honorable doesn't nescarily mean right. That is one of the more common deffinitions, but part of the technical definition (from Dictionary.com) is:

personal integrity, or a code of integrity, dignity, and pride

Just because someone goes around and makes people "Drop cargo or die." doesn't mean that they are dishonorable. doing things like giving fair warning, the "no buses and not three in a row" missions, giving people a couple of seconds after a worm hole jump, all these things can lead to a personal honor that has nothing to do with the fact that they are pirates.

Plus, I started a week ago, and though I've only had one person try to pirate me, I knew about the risks just from reading the message boards, and when offered a memeber ship in a pirating guild. In fact, I admire thier drive, but right now, I feel the need to get a little better (in levels and just used to the game) before I start doing something like that. But I do not expect to be dropping much cargo without a fight, its just not my character.

Well, if you want to shout a warcry and not waste time, just make a handy keybind. I remember way back in the day where I'd bind something like: "BANZAI!!!!" and /explode to a key, and run up to some valk who'd just finished a duel heavily damaged and light off. Got a lot of people mad... those were the days....

Yes the cargo liberation movment also saw action yesterday.

Took out about 40+ uit's working together. Its not that easy to camp a wormhole, as soon as you get a kos the local darthvader bot comes along to trash your pirate hog.

The bot would hang out around the wormhole and chase us off, spoiled it a bit as I would prefer to be iced by a human.

What was funny was that some of the same chars kept going through the same wormhole!

It's going to be hard for a pirate to chase someone, as soon as they jump to a station you have the local bots warning you to not fire on other ships. Gameover unless you want to be excluded from all stations.

Camping a wormhole is just about the only viabe way to get kills.

Bottom line is that it is no longer safe to run around in a bus with powercores, you will get blasted by a pirate guild.
As for warnings and such, The clm will get into that soon.

I dunno, your 'pirate' guild sounds a lot like a griefer guild...
Oct 07, 2004 -wes- link
well then you go play with the bots, running a pirate blockade would be much more fun.
A red dot closing in on you and lots of cargo floating around should be enough of a clue that pirates are about. we were there for more than a hour, where were the anti-pirate guilds? only one guy started to patrol the wormhole, and he did kill us a few times.
This game would be very dull without pirates or wars, whats the point of being a trader if their is no risk?

I'll be looking forward to combatting pirates when I get the hang of this generation of the game. So, keep honing your pirate skills and be ready.

I used to play back when there were three sectors of space and I loved the combat system.

The game has changed so much since then. I really look forward to seeing this game with a large amount of players.

I can see where this game gonna get interesting :) Several of my guildys and myself included got jumped coming out of a WH over the last couple days. Soooooooooo,,,as a guild, we discused ways of dealing with being pirated. Escorts of course being one option. As a result, we dicided to give ya pirate types a run fur yer money. I have already assigned one of my beta officers to establish a pirate asassination squadron to act as escorts and hunt you scurvy pirates down where you lurk!! Let the PvP commence :) Over time, as the guild grows, we could have multiple asasination squadrons, or perhaps work with other guilds and combine forces against the dread pirate roberts plague sweeping our trade lanes.

Side Note: Im assuming this would be acceptable practice for guilds to protect them selves. If not, lol, let us know now. :)

A mythical beast being half man and half horse.

In game its a Heavy cargo transport craft, it's the craft of choice for traders who don't have access to the UIT Maruader.

Pirateing is the mother of trader innovation, without pirateing tradeing is just tedious.

I'd assume that any guild worthy of being called a guild would look after its own. It's one of the most basic social and physical functions of a guild.

As for pirates, I look foreward to meeting you on the spacelanes. Just a friendly heads up- this trader has some teeth, and may jettison large quantities of Processed Biomatter. It's worse than mines, I tell you!

MMMMMMMMMm.....processed Bio Matter, go's good with a little mustard on a sesame roll :)

i think i'll attack any clm member on sight... they sound sort of indiscriminant
Oct 07, 2004 Starfisher link
Yes.

Folks - Being a pirate means that you are going after cargo alone, not kills. If you are just trying to kill people you are a serial killer. That is allowed for within the game rules, but don't expect the slightly more accepted status pirates can claim.

Now this is going to get interesting... ;-)

The problem as I see it atm is that there are 'alot' of pirates, but very few anti pirates. And a fair number of the pirates are killing people as soon as they wormhole in. I can understand the fun part of looking for opponants to fight, but at the same time I see it as not fun at all for the other guys wanting to go about his buisness.

And shooting people in newb ships should be an extremly big 'no, no' imho.
Oct 07, 2004 Starfisher link
Heh. Going for most PKs again Icarus?

Personally I'm trying to actually make a profit as a pirate. So far I've only had one big score - about 30k. That pad is being eaten into as I waste rockets on empty ships, etc.

I would hire myself out as an escort, but no one is asking for one in the chat. So... piracy it is!
Oct 07, 2004 -wes- link
More scanner info would help with not shooting new players.

True shoting first is not that nice but you only have 30sec to line up and hit the target. you cant wait for them to make up their mind about ditching the cargo.

It would be nice if you could get a disableing weapon that forces a ship to stop,or prevents it from jumping It could evan cause the cargo to be droped automaticly. With this their would be less kills and more true pirating.

Its over now anyway the strikeforce bots are too quick and strong for it to be worth the risk at the moment. azek j-1 will be safer for a while.
Oct 07, 2004 JuryRig link
Just don't expect this trader to just sit by quietly and let his cargo go.

Though I think that some scanning equipment and a way to disable ships would be a cool addition. Maybe include a dock type command, where you line up next to them to take their cargo. This also makes pirating dangerous in the sense that it takes time. But I welcome the challenge as a trader right now. But if it gets too bad, I may have to go on my own anti-pirating crusade eventually.
Oct 07, 2004 starfox link
However the pirating is done, the person being pirated should have some method of defending himself, even if its only a noticible alarm indicating incoming fire.
