Hi. I think we could use a thread where we could share our ideas and/or pass knowledge down to those than need it. Every game needs a "build thread". So maybe you're a trader and you want to ask what are good setups for a behemoth to have a chance of fighting back pirates? Or perhaps you wanna ask for a pvp Ragnarok setup? Just ask here and hopefully the community wont be stingy of their knowledge and share it. Don't forget that a good competition makes the game more fun :)

Ill start. Skyprom. Flares and AGT left and right. Are there no other setups that stand up to this tradition? And why don't I see anyone flying the proms in Nation War? Is it because this setup lacks endurance and no other setup is worth the time? Id like to take this ship to NW once I get the license for it but I wonder why its never there.Maybe its a bad idea? Last NW was something like 2 corvults,1 atlas, 1 hog and 12 valks?
Jan 14, 2014 abortretryfail link
You don't often see proms in NW because everyone prioritizes killing you first if you do fly a prom. For the same reason, you don't often see Ragnaroks or Centaurs. It's been done before, and if a whole team brings tanks it works out pretty well, but usually people prefer fast light fighters like Valkyries, Corvults, SVG, Centurions etc.

Most of the time hit and run tactics are favored in NW since the goal is not to die. On the other hand, in the case of station conquest the goal is to guard the docks until someone can capture the SCP is unrivaled.

Good points. So are there any other SCP builds that people use?
Jan 15, 2014 TheRedSpy link
As usual ARF is wrong.

You dont use proms in the nation war because people spend all day running away from you. It's like trying to win a Greyhound race with a Labrador. It's another reason why the nation war is a stupid itani invention. There is no objective therefore it's an entirely meaningless shambles of who can run away the most instead of an actual test of whos better at combat.

The second best SCP outfit is the Annihilator Prom, same as the gatprom but obviously with an annihilator. Since the recent buff to the plasma annihilator this prom is a serious contender. It has more reach than the 'brawler' prom but its not as useful in a confrontation with a lighter ship. This prom is for flanking and you'll never see me in it unless I have a second wingman prom in a brawler pattern to get the attention of the enemy first so I can hit them with the annihilator when they come out of the flare bounce provided by either myself of my teammate.

There are other prom loadouts you can use, but due to the average turning ratio of proms and the over-abundance of light ships you need a weapon that has a high autoaim threshold in the main port to compensate for its slow turning ratio, otherwise you'll rarely be presented with the opportunity to actually get an accurate shot off against a competent pilot.

As usual Espionage is bitter.

You don't use proms in the Nation War because you don't play the game. You think that if something doesn't work for you immediately then it's counterpart needs to be nerfed (Valkyries) or the one you suck with needs to be buffed (SCP's and Annies).

Any old idiot can be decent with a prom, but it's the Serco who are truly rubbish at it. Everything has to be done for the laziest pilots in the world, gotta have everything with good or better autoaim, have flares and the best heavy ship hands-down in the game.

So there are tons of overpowered Prom setups out there, including dual flare, with the unique ability to turn incredibly quickly and throw a set of flares down someone's throat, accompanied by Gatling Turret fire to kill the rest off. If you were a competent pilot, you'd know that.

I'm quite fed up with the devs having to tiptoe around you because you whine and whine all day, like a baby.
Jan 15, 2014 TheRedSpy link
Hahaha

One thing you'll notice about Kierky and ARF, they have mastered the art of calling people whiners while whining themselves. Whoever was supposed to be whining actually wasn't at all, but we don't want to ruin their world view do we?

The idea that incarnate tiptoes around me is hilarious, about as hilarious as the idea that you know what you're talking about when it comes to prom setups.

Oh and by the by, the "old idiot" of VO, you know, the cherub, he's absolutely rubbish in proms and his only claim to fame is he's managed to indoctrinate a bunch of newbs that wouldn't know better into the idea that he's decent at flying a prom, when really I could teach spuck's dullbot to fly it better than he does.

While it may not take any skill to shoot a gatling turret, it does take skill to leverage the prom as an effective group combat tool, something which you've demonstrated on countless occasions you know nothing about.

I apologize in advance for tainting this thread further, but...

TRS, I'll ask again, why are you here?

You don't play the game, but only whinny about it when you don't whinny about other players' oppinions or branding them whinniers. Are you a kind of an all-knowing-always-true being? Or a god, maybe?

Seriously, what's your deal?

You know, you don't die if you shut up for a while. Hmm, maybe you do, as I don't know what kind of being you are.

I also wonder if you know how almost every player (even noobs who only saw you on IRC_) dispise you. Is this your role-play? You are so convincing if it is, no comment otherwise.

Summary of above:

Arf says: NW favors hit-and-run, which the prom isn't good it.

TRS says: No you are wrong! The real reason is that NW favors hit-and-run, which the prom isn't good at!

Kierky says: No, u dum!

TRS says: No u, because Ecka!

Jashen says: Are... are you god?

:P

Anyways, back on topic. I of course am rather enamored with the dual-gauss Corvult. It's heavy, but for me it is one of the most satisfying loadouts to use. When I hit somebody with gauss, I fell like I hit them; smaller energy weapons just feel like bouncing spitballs off their hull.

I also like dual-jackhammer Centaurs, with gauss (or whatever) in the small port. They are very good at killing things, with the downside being that they use up ammo. Since I tend to be out of practice with rockets, that becomes a pretty big downside for me. They're still fun though.

Similarly, my preferred Prom loadout is dual-gauss and a jackhammer. For a while I maintained standing with Serco and used it to pretty good effect. I'm not sure how much of that was it actually being effective and how much was just due to people going WTF and dropping their guard.

Jack-moths are fun too.

(I'm ignoring whiney bitter non-players for the rest of this thread)

One of my personal favorites is a Vulture MkIII with a Fast Charge Powercell and two Ineubis Raven Ion Blasters. It's light, quick, and cheap. The whole setup rings up just over 10000c, and is a good all-around fighter.

I prefer to think of it as death by a thousand cuts.

The Ineubis Raven is a great blaster because it is very light, does almost as much damage as a Neutron Blaster, and has a decent velocity. Otherwise I prefer Axia Positrons. Flares are great, because I can stun or sometimes juggle an opponent with them. Starflares, if I'm flying a light ship (Corvult or Orion Centurion), Sunflares in a medium-heavy powerhouse (Prom, Valk, Revenant) although I mix it up sometimes. Learn how to count flares when facing an opponent who is using them (I keep a mnemonic tally going in 1v1: am I "up one", "down two", etc.).

Using the Gatling Turret effectively is an art (I try to be very conservative in my bursts, luring my opponent in, flicking autoaim off and on when necessary), but I also like to mess around with random weapons like the Concussion Railgun sometimes, because it is so unexpected. Facing a ship like the SCP in a light fighter, it is possible to get to a "golden zone" where I can strafe around the Prom staying just outside the GT's firing arc at extreme close range, but this is very risky on the breakaways. I think of this as "dancing with the turret"; some pilots are very deft at this.

Take the above paragraphs with a grain of salt: I get beaten regularly by abortretryfail and Pizzasgood.

I like to sometimes put a Prox Mine in the heavy slot... people in one on one are generally surprised when the ship charging them drops a mine on their cockpit.
Jan 15, 2014 Faille Corvelle link
My personal faves:

PvP: CorVult, FC, AAP+XgX.
It's light and agile, and a nice comprimise between firepower and efficiency.

Farming Arklans: TungMaud, FC, 2x MP.
60cu cargo, nimble enough to dodge gatling fire, and the firepower to drop Arklans fast.

Hive Skirms: Hog2, FC, MP, AAP. (Or just the CorVult above)
Kills things quick, and can evade most bot fire.

Put a swarm on the back port of a Centaur, and a proximity mine on the front.

for the OP, my favorite SCP load out is for botting: 2x gauss cannon mk3 and a plasdev2 (tho now I think you can use an Ani over the plasdev2 since the grid has been reduced). For NW, SCP's need to operate as a phalanx (a team holding formation) to rip apart the hit and runners as they attempt to pick on any one of the team. The moment unit cohesion breaks down and the SCP's try to chase individual targets, they are all doomed.

As for favorite ships & set-ups. I love the Centurion RevC with UC + 2x AAP's. The IBG Centurion is better still but I tire of the trip from Jallick, and the revC is very close to the IBG. If you have a stash of Hive Posis, that reduces the load-out another 200kg. This is a shoot less/hit more low-armor agile fighter: you want to dodge dip duck dive and dodge all the time, and only fire when you have a shot. If you are an energy spammer, you'll want less energy per shot than posis.

My favourite loadouts.
Valkyrie X-1: AAP/LawNeut/Sunfare/UC
This setup is my most versatile one, capable of dismantling vultures, warthogs, ragnaroks and sometimes with a little patience, proms.

Centurion Itani Border Guardian: AAP/LawNeut/UC
Incredibly agile, and a mix of rapid fire and heavy hitting, good for light dogfights and medium ship outmaneuvering. The only problem with this is it cannot take on heavy ships for long, due to paper thin armor.
