When are we actually going to get a decent update?

This entire summer, and about 2 months before, nothing of interest has happened. Literally, nothing. How much longer are we going to have to wait? This is starting to become frustrating. So, may I ask, when?

enjoy the game for what it is, no other game has weekly updates. Buy an android tablet and try vo on there

Yes, because everybody has hundreds of dollars to throw away on a piece of hardware that they don't actually need, just so they can play a game in an inferior manner to the way they already play it. Excellent idea.

Hi. The phone build has been delayed a little, along with some other factors. We are trying to get back to gameplay development as soon as possible. As of last week, we've been aiming for this week, it remains to be seen if that will happen. Our focus has been on two areas:

1) VO for Android-based Phones. As ridiculous as this may seem to some, it's actually pretty neat in my opinion (and playable, although not great for PvP). But more importantly, it will gain us significant exposure. Google, Sony Ericsson, NVIDIA and others are looking to push this. The existing Android build has only been available to tablet owners, a tiny subset of the platform. The handset release, conversely, will be pushed out to the phone owners, to which there are 500,000 added every day.

2) An alternate server location on Amazon EC2, as an emergency provision, should we be hit with a very large influx of users at some point in the not-too-distant future (probably not solely due to Android, but becoming a stronger possibility when combining that and other un-announced projects). That might seem surprising, and unlikely, to the average player, but we have reason to be taking these steps.

Once these two projects are completed (and both are very close), our main focus will be on fixing bugs and adding small, high-priority features. Such as: addressing the drop-off in escort missions over long server uptimes (and potentially changing traffic density in general). Adding a way to delete keys, and so on.

We thought the phone build would be launched mid-August. Then everyone in the universe apparently went on vacation, plus a bunch of challenging new bugs were discovered, combined with some personal medical stuff.

Fair enough.

500,000 added every day

I think you misplaced a 0 there, Inc.

Agreed, spidey, everything you've said is understandable and now that I have a little more insight into what's been dragging the development behind, I think you're doing exactly what needs to be done.

Lecter, there's a point where your attention-seeking, although just a distraction, can be irritating. And also, if you try to make a witty comment, make sure it's witty.

Estrogen, there's a point at which you'll hit puberty, although that obviously hasn't arrived yet.

Fyi, May 2011 data from Google was 400k "activations" per day for all Android devices -- including tablets. Not sales, not new users, "activations". Since then the rate has declined, not increased, and given the current state of the world economy you shouldn't look to see anything but more decline for the foreseeable future. Anything else, child?

Oh, burn. It hurts so bad. I'm amazed at the fact that you've resorted to joking about my prepubescence, and more amazed at the fact that you weren't even able to maintain an ounce of relevance in your joke. That's a new low, for you.

Lecter, please specify the rate at which activations are declining. Besides the fact that, even considering and assuming that the rate of decline is huge, GS is still much more financially stable and well grounded, and (hopefully), during the time of this financial peak for GS, they'll be able to improve the game enough to prevent it from failing after the income that generates from androids is gone.

There won't be a huge influx of new users. There won't be any epic updates in the future. There will be Inc telling you again and again that "We had planned to do <x> but then <y> and <z> happened and then a whole bunch of other excuses that are mostly bullshit but I should also mention. I promise we'll get back to adding new gameplay once we've failed to make any headway into the mobile market for the second time."

is the portable segment really as important as it's made out to be? sure another 30 or so online players will double the player count. But is such devotion to phones, leaving gameplay development behind a worthy goal to chase?

I mean sure a new market is nice and all, exposure from having the app pre-installed on the main page is useful. But once there..angry bird players are welcomed with a mostly empty world in a game that sorta-works, the best features force a huge handicap, there are no real aids to speak of, and should a phone player run into a proper rat it'll be a turkey shoot. And once that becomes old news there is the usual problem: nothing much to do.

More likely, the makers of the phones are willing to compensate a maker of an indie mmo for the time it takes to port an established and (cover your eyes for this next part, ex-BLAK members,) polished game to the barren landscape of their fancy phone.

Having an impressive GPU on your tablet is nice, but hard to justify when the only 3D game for the android is a sad port of the original doom. I imagine Guild's gotten, at the very least, some cooperative buddies in the world of tech corporate drones, thanks to the time put into the android ports.

PS: I hope the medical issues work out and that everyone is doing well.

PPS: I hope yoda's right about the banning thing. Fucking carebears.

Until you do the faction redux and fix the hanging voys and as a bonus, add content I'm calling bs Inc. Feel free to prove me wrong.

I miss the old days when Devs did development, and phones were used to make phone call...

For me, a more limited client would be more suitable for small screens. Maybe more than one version, like the simplest one only allows to use IRC/100 and operate station interface / player owned shop/booth, then another able to fly/travel and mine with auto-assistants, and finally full game...

Anyway, go for it, Inc... but I see that it is time to bring in more people to your team, or when things work out you will be seeking and training new hands... get someone now, start training, and it will prove its value when good times come!

Time keeps on slipping slipping slipping....into the future.

You have had 13 years of silence from the Wing Commander franchise and 11 years of silence from Freespace which is probably the only reason any other space games have even managed to grasp for their survival but the clock is ticking away

-GoG.com is continuing to bring WC back into EA's radar with impressive sales of the re releases of wc1, 2 and Privateer with academy, armada, 3 and 4 on the way in the coming weeks.

-Wing Commander Academy the tv show is now on DVD as of this week

-Chris Roberts the father of it all has been seen publicly stating that it is time for him to revisit the series.

The Terran Confederation may make its return

As crazy as it sounds I think we are more likely to see a new rebirth of Wing Commander than finished VO and I never ever ever would have thought this a few years back but essentially a new WC (assuming it isn't totally nerfed and horrible) will equal the death (moreso) of all smaller space games so you better get your ass in gear soon and hope all this cell phone junk pays off cause time is running out.
