That tutorial does not require any equipping. The weapon and battery are automagically installed and are immediately functional upon launching.
But in my case, it seems that the weapon is not equipped.

Should I delete my character and restart the tutorial?

Thank you.

Given the circumstances you seem to be encountering, yes, I suggest starting anew.

Alright, a new character, restarting the mission.

Getting some kills on those collectors: Easy. But they leave a lot of scrap metal and power cells. Nothing so far has indicated how to pick them up.

When finished, I head back to the station to dock. When I got near, I saw the message (I think), "Press enter to dock". The instructions said that I just needed to press activate -- enter by default on macs -- and I'd go in.

But instead, I got "You have to take training mission three to leave the trading area."

It wasn't until I was actually inside the docking bay before enter would actually dock.

AH, you may have drifted into and then out of the accepted docking range. If you press Activate (which is also *jump*) when not in docking range you will get that message because you cannot jump and change sector until you have completed training mission 3.

I guess it could be handled better, but yeah, generally, you need to be inside the docking bay to dock, otherwise *enter* isn't a docking key, it's a jump key also.

Ok, so you pick stuff up by running into it.

But they are tiny. And I can't find any "Target nearby cargo container" button.

Still, scrap metal seems profitable -- on the scale of completing the two optional missions. This makes it more profitable than the one that requires killing 8 in the distance, but less than killing 4 nearby. Note that I had to figure out how to sell before the game was telling me how.

Mission 4: Apparently, there are only supposed to be three buttons: unload, unload and sell, and sell all. There's also unload all, and the second is "sell" not "unload and sell".

Oh yea -- shooting asteroids does not make them shake and throw off ore :-)

You can target cargo the same way you target a roid, point at it and press the "b" key. You can also use a plugin called cargolist but I wouldn't worry about that quite yet.

You worked out the need to sell before the game told you is all. Once you complete this fragment, you will be shown how to trade and mine via other missions. I think you are a bit too eager, and that is a good thing. Wade through the first missions, and once you find a way to leave the starting sector, well, that's where you could earn money as a new player.

Welcome to VO. Hope I get a chance to shoot you soon :)
Aug 19, 2010 Whistler link
The mission actually does tell you to fly in to the docking bay, though you can dock slightly outside. I think it's as ntli says.

Tell ya what: It's 5:20 pacific now, and I'll be coming back on at 5:30 pacific. So, go to the UIT sector where us poor newbies are dumped into the unforgiving real world, and I should be departing the station.

(Mission #4 and #5, I think, both are purely in-station; mission #6 I think has me going back out.)

Are you Vasella Solan?
Aug 19, 2010 Keybounce link
"Keybounce".

So after wandering around the solar system, as an escort aid, my leader had to go elsewhere. Ok, fine.

So the military guy goes somewhere. So does his relief ship. So does the mapping ship. All to the same spot.

???

And, then the other beginners (all AI's) also go to the same spot.

???
Aren't we supposed to complete our mission back at the space station?

What kind of trouble can a trouble maker get into by going where they're not supposed to?

Lets find out.
Aug 19, 2010 Keybounce link
Foo.

Logged off to deal with some stuff.
Come back on, and the mission is "interrupted". It doesn't keep track of state across sessions. Mission log has none of the chat from the last sector.

Try it again.
Aug 19, 2010 Keybounce link
Alright, some more thoughts.

First, the second time around, the chat log did not include what sectors the other ships went to. So, no trouble maker.

Next, mission 4 -- station interface -- does not go off the list of missions.

Cargo: I feel like a need some bags in my bag slots. I fill up my cargo hold very quickly -- too quickly. And I'm not permitted to buy a ship with more cargo space. Why???

I could not even leave a sector, sell stuff, and go back to the previous sector -- the drops were gone. Gaarrgggh.

Which brings up the question: How do you track what's where in a sector when you're not near the starbase? There doesn't seem to be a sector-local co-ordinate grid displayed.

Anyways, a few missions. Transporting a datapad, and a second one back. And, somehow, unlocking another ship -- this time, with 22 cargo instead of 18. And a mission that has me to carry 20 units somewhere.

Around now, I'm noticing something. I have missions to:
1. Destroy specific bots, and get their cores.
2. Collect scrap iron from bots.
3. Training -- destroy bots for fun and profit

But I can't take all of them at once. I get one mission, no matter how much overlap there is between them.

What I want is cargo space. But I can not sort the list of available ships by cargo space. If I could, I could look at the licences required. Better would be if I could ask, which missions give me which experience rewards?

But I can't. I can't tell what the reward for a mission will be until AFTER I've taken the mission.

I want to know what ships have good cargo space, and only a little more experience/licenses needed than I currently have. But I can't get that information.

I feel frustrated.

For the "kill bots", my first thought was simple: Take my training laser, put it on my newer ship, and go back to the training sector. Lots of bots, easy to deal with, right? Nope -- I'm told that if I do, I'll be shot on sight.

Part of me wants to head to an "unlawful" system, and see if they will sell me a ship higher than my current cargo license.

You need to be within 1000m of a ship to see where it jumps.

It's meant to do that, it only gives information.

Cargo: I feel like a need some bags in my bag slots. I fill up my cargo hold very quickly -- too quickly. And I'm not permitted to buy a ship with more cargo space. Why???

You don't need to pick up every piece of cargo in a sector. My suggestion, for now, is to grab the most valuable or useful pieces of cargo and take them back with you when you repair. Also keep in mind that cargo adds to your ship's weight and makes you less maneuverable, so wait until you are leaving a sector to pick up the cargo - and you can jettison cargo if you picked it up by accident or are going into combat by pressing the "j" key. You can also select asteroids and cargo that your ship is pointing at by pressing the "b" key or scrolling up with your mousewheel.

---

I could not even leave a sector, sell stuff, and go back to the previous sector -- the drops were gone. Gaarrgggh.

Heh, yeah, this happens... after a certain amount of time of not picking it up, cargo will disappear... but it has nothing to do, really, with you leaving the sector. You just need to be fast about it.

---

Which brings up the question: How do you track what's where in a sector when you're not near the starbase? There doesn't seem to be a sector-local co-ordinate grid displayed.

Could you clarify this? You may be confused. Each of the grids on the nav screen are "sectors," the entire grid is called a "system," and if you zoom out, all that is called part of a "galaxy" (astronomy 101). Anyways, assuming that it might answer your possible question, you can press the "n" key at any time to access your nav screen in-flight as well as the "u" key to access a sensor log listing all the ships in your current sector (click on a name to target it).

---

But I can't take all of them at once. I get one mission, no matter how much overlap there is between them

I'm not sure on the devs' position on mission multi-tasking, but it's not yet a feature. The impression I had was that it's coming Soon(tm).

What I want is cargo space. But I can not sort the list of available ships by cargo space. If I could, I could look at the licences required. Better would be if I could ask, which missions give me which experience rewards?

Go to the buy ships menu, select a ship that you can't get, and it should display all of its license requirements and stats (as well as cargo space). License requirement is somewhere near the top and it's in a format that looks like a/b/c/d/e where a is Combat license level, b is Light Weapons license level, c is Heavy Weapons license level, d is Trade license level (this is the one you want if you're looking for ships with lots of cargo), and e is Mining license level. Browse the menu, find a ship that you think you might like, find what license it requires, and go out and level towards that goal.

The license rewards a mission gives are generally reflected by the subject of the action. Missions requiring you to haul cargo around will give you good trade xp, for example.

---

I want to know what ships have good cargo space, and only a little more experience/licenses needed than I currently have. But I can't get that information.

I believe my last bit of text explained this.

For the "kill bots", my first thought was simple: Take my training laser, put it on my newer ship, and go back to the training sector. Lots of bots, easy to deal with, right? Nope -- I'm told that if I do, I'll be shot on sight.

If you hover your mouse over an asteroid sector on your navigation map, it should tell you what bots are there. Once you've left the training sector, you get kersplatted by insta-kill lasers if you go back. It's to prevent people from killing the newbies. Might I also warn you that training lasers suck, get some new weapons already lol.

---

Part of me wants to head to an "unlawful" system, and see if they will sell me a ship higher than my current cargo license.

You can do that, actually. If you feel adventurous, Corvus is faction you want. If you find one of their stations, they will sell you basic variant ships even if you only have half of the required license levels.

Keybounce: I do appreciate the feedback. Some of the things you're asking for (like a sector-level navigation system that uses waypoints, so one can easily find where one left a bunch of Stuff) are in development. We also intend to better display the pros/cons of various ship types to the user, as well as the requirements for those ship types. We're overdue for a major UI overhaul, but that takes a tremendous amount of development resources that are currently being utilized by other projects/opportunities. But we have been actively, recently planning how that UI overhaul will be implemented, and researching some cool new technology related to that.

We're also looking at having cargo persist for much longer periods of time. There are definite tradeoffs to this, but it would be very useful in some cases.
Aug 20, 2010 Keybounce link
Considering that I'm being told "Jettison all cargo, pick it up when you're ready to lead", then yea, I'd say better ability to find cargo you've scanned / been near to / your kills dropped over a long time period is important.

How do you tell the value of cargo before picking it up? "j" tells me the value of the stuff in my cargo hold, but it seems to be the total value, not value per cargo space.

And, I cannot figure out how to jettison part of a cargo load. For example, seeing that second AI core, and only wanting to drop one unit of purified ore to pick it up.

How does collector bot respawn work? It seemed impossible to secure the area to safely get the cargo.
Aug 20, 2010 Keybounce link
Is there a "Go to next object" radar command? "b" will target what's in front of me, and I can re-aim my ship, "b", re-aim, "b", re-aim, "b", but there's no (that I saw) simple "next, next, next" command.
Aug 20, 2010 yodaofborg link
Target next and previous are [ + ], I dunno if Target next/previous object still has a use, but thats { + }
