Consider pykrete: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pykrete

But anyway, who remembers what the stations are made out of? I have a vague recollection that the HUD said something about it when you could target station parts.

If it's concrete, someone surely wrote their name in it somewhere before it dried.

FYI, I can make it look more metallic through altering the specular map. But this last update I could only touch the diffuse and alpha maps, due to some ongoing work with the shaders and things.

Anyway, I'll have to revisit it down the road.

The concrete would not freeze (quickly), especially since concrete curing is an exothermic process. On the contrary, it might be necessary to actively cool it.

As for outgassing, if the stations are built in modules, it would be fairly easy to create curing tanks, in which slabs of concrete could be produced (and they might be even easier to cure than on a planet's surface, due to the severely reduced gravitational field strength).

Also, I have to play VO more often.

Edit: Apologies for the off-topicness. Now I'm thinking about the availability and production of cement in outer space. Yay, procrastination.

It might be easier to uniformly pre-stress concrete in 0G.

Ugh, why am I getting sucked into this discussion? Anyway, I'll make them look like metal at some point.

Hey Inc, do you recall something about what the stations are made of? I swear it was spelled out somewhere. Maybe it was simply xithricite alloy or xirite.

Don't think I'm complaining, Incarnate, it does look great... increasing the detail just brings it out! If the stations always look like stone but the gameplay and community are great, it's not a problem. But if you do revisit it down the road and make the stations look like metal, that's a bonus!

May 22 12:39:12 <FiReMaGe> I always felt like I was dealing with concrete
May 22 12:39:22 <raybondo> they are concrete
May 22 12:39:28 <raybondo> and rebar
May 22 12:39:31 <raybondo> and metal
May 22 12:39:33 <raybondo> i think
May 22 12:39:39 <FiReMaGe> oh... interesting
May 22 12:39:49 <raybondo> of course this is pure speculation
May 22 12:40:00 <FiReMaGe> I'm too used to everything space-involved being metal
May 22 12:40:03 <raybondo> they take asteroids and grind them up
May 22 12:40:14 <raybondo> and ice crystals and melt them down
May 22 12:40:43 <raybondo> and then mix the two with some xith
May 22 12:40:46 <raybondo> and voila

:p

You just know that you're going to feel compelled to create a 'instant xicrete' (just add aquean!) widget now. :^)

slime: that is Ray randomly making stuff up, and has no bearing on canon ;).

vIsitor: heheh. Perhaps you'll need to craft it.. take the components to be ground, then take the ground stuff and aquean to be combined somewhere else and cast into molds.. ahh yes.

Incarnate: yeah, which is why I included this line:

Although perhaps some people might miss it and think that is actually how stations are made. :P
