Ship model mods?

I looked around a little bit and was curious like the skin mods that are out if we could get a tool to extract the main data file? or a source of the 3d ships and skins. A way to make use of custom models skins client side only.

I would like to work on a mod that updated the ships look on my own computer and if something came out that i liked i could submit it to online for others to try or vo to adopt. Heck if this was something the public has access to various ppl might come up with ships that could update the over all look of vo.

also i guess info on what kind of shaders are currently being used. (spec bump ect) If you have special format for the exported model a model exporter would be needed. A standard layout or template for the graphics positions of weapons and thrusters (with out actually changing the maneuverability of a ship)

Is this even possible?

Is the dev team able to make is so we can mod the ships with out allowing us to hack or cheat the system? Is the only way submitting ship designs that vo installs themselves?

thx

This has been requested/suggested a few times, but yeah, I would love to see something like this. Most of the models would look a hell of a lot better with updated textures.

Also, and I'm not sure if this would work, but would one be able to create an HD texture pack for people with better computers?

Custom client-side textures for ships might be interesting, but client side custom models just won't work. Ship model plays a big role in that "stats" (so to say) of their respective ships. For example, Raptors are terrible because they're so easy to hit. I think that the devs would much value something contributed by players that can be implemented directly into the game, if you're particularly good at 3d modeling. Downside of that option is that you can't get pony-shaped HACs (I won't ask where you would dock).

found a issue.
this was mentioned off site, check this image out.

looks like they have normal mapped versions of the ships already which would be a huge improvement but in game i turned on all my settings and all i get is the lowest polygon ship with out any bump mapping or normal mapping effects. is this a problem with my settings or computer windows - or is this not implemented yet?

You could keep the collision meshes from being edited thus allowing custom client side meshes with out affecting game play.

There is definitely normal (and specularity) mapping on many of the ships, such as the Raptor, Vulture, Warthog, the Revenant (the ship pictured in that image) and various others. If it isn't showing up, it may be something specific to your settings or config.

Also, here's an older post about some of our artistic specs:

ok thx i will research it a bit more and thx for the link to the specs i might give it a go to add some detail to existing ships with that post in mind. first is to fix the ingame graphics though..

Ok update - switching to the dx9 driver gives me much more desirable look- normal mapping still is not as noticeable as it could be but at least i can see it now. Thx Check back on this Thread for model updates.

One thing i will ask for is all the models to be released as obj so others, like me can mod them or try to make hi res versions of the existing models. thx

Here is a model I'm working on to improve the hornet, I'm not promising anything but so far so good. This took me about 2 hours and still needs some cleanup. Next will be the high poly version for normal map work.

sitting around 500 tri's atm

I actually kind of like this. Keep the general look just update the details. Great! (although I don't know if this would be an option for some ships that are as horribly designed as the Centaur)

actuly i have some plans for that as well. but lets not get ahead of our selfs.

Funny, I'm doing the exact same thing for the hog. Nice model though.

Like incarnate says in the linked post there are some models that already have some detail to them. So i plan on working on ones that do not have that detail first. Keep in mind only those models have successfully met requirements and no one else from the community have submitted anything that has been accepted. So we will see if my model even cuts it. There is a lot of work in just one model as well. Its not just a 3d model but many layers of detail that have to flow well together.

i'm glad ppl like the model i hope it keeps getting better!

Here is a detail shot. If people have comments or suggestions now would be the time. I have it uv'd unwrapped and a detail model done. Next would be to start working on rendering the normal map and working on the texture.

16k tri's with little nibs only on one side.

You've got some original details there, can't wait for more. Will this version have a windowed cockpit or will it be in the style of the EC-89/Raptor/Revenant in that sense?

Windowed cockpits look ugly. Avoid them when at all possible.

Hmm, thats not too far from the original hornets shape, but it does look way cooler. The Hornet is the crappest looking ship in the game, even Inc think it looks crap!
Jan 27, 2010 ladron link
The rag is definitely uglier than the hornet, but yeah, they both look like shit.
Jan 27, 2010 ShankTank link
And the Centaur is uglier than the rag.

I don't agree. I think, when done properly, windowed cockpits look awesome. Matter of personal opinion I guess.

The other thing about windowed cockpits is that, while I get that future tech will likely remove our need to view the outside world from our transports, it won't necessarily remove our desire to do so.

Good design and effort. Hope it
My cents:

-Reduce wings and nose and remove frontal air intakes. This is not an atmospheric ship.

-Move 2 Sports to tips of wings, to justify its existence and spread the shots, good idea for an asault ship

-What are those details on belly?

-i dont like black cockpits... if no glass or mirror texture available, make it light silver, metallic.
