Out of curiosity, why doesn't the "length" parameter correspond to the actual model length to begin with?
It requires someone measuring the length in max, it's not automated. We used to actually use that data for something, but we stopped a long time ago, so now it's purely "informational" (albeit, faux-informational), and the priority of its accuracy has fallen. So, it's been guesstimated for awhile.

I'm pretty sure that 1 cu of "Steel" is actually a very small piece of steel in a huge crate with packing noodles.
Because that's how steel is normally shipped. Such a fragile material :P
