"Why it wasn't just changed to 30 seconds anytime you're logging off in space is beyond me." - Dr. Lecter
Because when you're no where near any combat-related tasks where there is no danger to you at all, its a large hassle to wait 30 seconds to log off. Not everyone engages in PVP or is close enough to Pirates, to warrant such a measure.

Maybe it should be 30 seconds if there is another player in the sector, normal if the sector is otherwise empty. That seems like a simple compromise.
OH NO, 20 MOAR SECONDS?!
Dude, if you want to log off in space, make sure you're in the middle of nowhere and just quit. You'll only drift helplessly for the time you'd be sitting helplessly anyway.

The update utility claims that the new 30 second log off after receiving a personal message is “to give you time to respond before getting logged off.”
Please. That is just insulting. Why not just admit that it is a pacifier for rats who are POed over traders logging off to avoid them? There is nothing wrong with the idea but at least admit why it was instituted and give up the lie that it for the “convenience of players who are desperate not to miss messages.

Keep in mind that the precipitating event of this boondoggle was a pirate logging off to dodge some VPR scum.

A pirate who was trading for a week as I recall.....

I have no idea why Ray wrote the thing about giving time to let people respond to messages. You can see my discussion linked up at the top of the thread.
VPR scum? This is clearly a majority rat feature. Most people would find little use for this. Just goes to show which side gets more catered to and favoritism.
That seems to be the common theme of what I am hearing from people anyways.

Boy you sure are right! I guess all those turrets were actually pirate friendly all along!

If anyone wants to read WHY this came about, feel free to read the actual suggestions forum thread that I linked in the second freakin' post. There were complaints of a combative exploit, whether trader or non-trader or whatever, the complaints did not seem unreasonable, and we implemented something we believed would have the least impact on the majority of cases other than those cited. Particularly, Kierky's post is notable:
That is a very good idea. Impavid logged in his moth, brought his alt in a combat ship, killed me, logged back to trade alt and then continued his run. You can't tell me this wasn't an exploit. And he was 4000m away, and still managed to log.
That was certainly the post that got my attention. Even with a substantial skill disparity, the possibility of such an exploit was.. not right.
So we tried to find something equitable that would not annoy everyone. This is not favoritism. Furthermore, most of the people complaining here haven't even taken the time to read what actually took place. After all, it's more exciting to make up your own accusatory theories than to read something.
If someone has a desire that some aspect of this feature be changed, based on their actual personal experience with the feature (not in theory based on How They Think It Might Work), feel free to create a new Suggestions Forum thread (and, guess what?! I'll read that one too!).
If people would like to accuse me of playing favorites and catering only to specific users or gameplay types, feel free to go play another goddamn game. I have no patience for it. I strive do the best I can for the game as a whole; all work has its flaws, but we listen to what you guys say and try to react within the significant limits of our resources and reasonable development requirements. I have no personal agenda for Serco, Itani, Pirate, Trader, Miner, or anyone else. I'm just trying to make the game better, one day at a time.

The pirates are always going to think you are catering to the traders. The traders are always going to think you are catering to the pirates. Everything you do will be seen by someone to be unfairly pandering to a different subset. Especially when the traders mostly talk to traders, and the pirates mostly talk to pirates, and ne'er the twain shall meet.
Personally, I think there have been some good suggestions to tweak this from its original implementation, especially the part about needing to be in the same sector in order to delay someone's logoff with a message. I can think of no reason why being able to do so not in the same sector would be a benefit, and can imagine it being used to annoy people a lot.
Frankly, I'm impressed that it went from concept to reality so quickly. Sure, it's not entirely perfect yet, but it doesn't seem like any show-stopping exploits were introduced with it, and it closes an exploit that has been around for a long time. A job well done, in my book.

Making it a PM within the same sector might be a bit more challenging, though I agree it would make sense.
I think the concern over favoritism is more of an individual perspective, not so much a traders/pirates thing.

I like being able to log off in space without falling asleep in space, and I understand why some people don't want others logging off in ten seconds.
I think the adopted solution is the best.
