OVER NINE THOUSAAAAND!!!
yiff in hell.
Oh no you don't. I have a dinner reservation with a party of 300, so hell is booked solid. As a consolation gesture, the last three participants in this thread shall all receive a hefty platter of bacon for the trouble they went through to post their replies.
Madness.
So here is the alternate centurion.

Smooth, yes? I'm having a devil of a time getting the polycount down, as one would imagine. From left to right:
1: Original idea which prompted me to revive this:
http://evula.org/vigilantisim/Beta6.jpg
Created with a very old program, a long time ago. Modeled in a totally different fashion. Et cetera.
2: sourcebox for the smooth versions. Good candidate for a hit/collision box.
3: What it looks like with the amount of polys I want.
4: What I want it to look like. roughly.

Because that doesn't look like a STNG Romulan ship or anything.
Yikes. I'm afraid Lecter is right. That's close enough to a Romulan Warbird that you'd have cries of outrage from potential Trekkies who may see the screenshots.
Still, I wish I could make models like that.

Dammit. You're right. I had to look it up, but. Yeah. My old model isn't nearly as close. Must revise the loop shape.
Yeah, Lecter is right. I like the sleek, hand-crafted look though; very Itani.
Ditch the nacelles (or have more than two) and revise the loop bit, and you might have something,

Or if you provide some sort of visual cue to make it obvious that it's longer vertically than horizontally. Do that, put four nacelles on, put guns or sensors on top and bottom, and then make the cockpit/body visually appealing enough and even with a shape not too far from this the Warbird resemblance would be gone.
hell...its different enough from the Romulan ship, if any trekkies start whining they are just looking for a reason to bitch. it is SOME WHAT similar but not enough to infringe on any copy righted material.
Also, the volume model now looks kind of like the EC-89 (spindle shape).
It's nice, but where's the rest of the ship? Or is it a frame with multiple loadout possibilities?

I think I killed the accidental trek look while keeping the concept. Fact, it's closer now to the original.

I like this.
The shape makes me think of a planetary lander- something well suited to getting down from orbit in one piece. The current Cent gives me the same impression, but this redesign lacks the, er, "compensator factor" of the Cent. More importantly, the overall profile is quite similar to the Centurion, meaning that it should act well as a replacement. The large open area might actually make it a very interesting fighting ship, as shots directed right at the center have a chance of passing straight through at certain angles.

Thanks. I think it matches the fluff for the Cent pretty well - has that pleasurecraft-turned trainer-turned combat ship look.
I think the alt looks more like the futuristic spacecraft many people want, but they are both nicely done. I like them both, can we put both in?
Now that I've read the backstory, I think that the Itani love their sleek, sexy designs. The serco are more enthused by angular, simple shapes. UIT I can imagine as being somewhere in-between, but with most of their efforts going into pragmatic design. Note: I hate the Marauder. Ugliest damn thing I've seen in the game yet.
godamn i like that desing but i think it should replace the hornet instead *too long to be a cent*
Amazing how such a simple change can totally kill the Trek look. Nice touch.
Are the aft "fins" vertical on the last one? It looks a little...
Dunndunnnuuunahhh... batman!

Heh, the Marauder does look rather clunky, but it does look right for what it is- a cargo hauler that can put up a fight. I can just see the initial design meeting, held among the best second-rate engineers of all the corporations, aided with a liberal quantity of alcohol...
"Okay, we need to make it with a simple, durable main hull..."
"BALLIN' COCKPIT!"
"...a wide set of weapon mounts for decent spread fire without making an inordinately large target..."
"ROCK EM' SOCK EM' ROBOT ARMS!"
"...and it must be able to carry a very large quantity of cargo, again without presenting an overly large profile."
"BOX-BUTT!"
"Alright, that's a wrap. Let's hit the bar."
"BEER! BEER! BEER! BEER!"
And they went off and spent the rest of the scheduled design time in the bar, singing this horribly off key while dancing atop the tables: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXy6JHYa5Ks
And that's how the Marauder was created.
