Possibility: Dropping OS X 10.2 support

We're considering dropping support for MacOS X 10.2.8. OS 10.3 and better would still run the game, but not 10.2. In fact.. the game may not have been runnable on 10.2.8 for a few weeks now. Generally, we try to keep as broad compatibility as possible, but 10.2 is becoming kind of a technical burden.

My question is, does anyone have any feedback on this? Are there a horde of players secretly waiting to play the game on their 800mhz iBook with 10.2.8, or anything? Considering the game has probably been broken under 10.2 for a few weeks, and no one has said anything or complained at all, that implies it isn't terribly important to our mac userbase; but I figured I would post and ask, just in case.

In my experience, Mac users eagerly await new system updates, and stick within one version of current. I don't think you'll have a single complaint, especially if dropping 10.2 support allows cooler things to happen with more recent systems. I think G4 iBooks will still run 10.4, so you're good even with older Macs. I think you should proceed.

I'm in favour of dropping 10.2, especially if it requires lots of work to stay compatible. Most games these days require 10.5 or at least 10.4 anyway.

I would agree with PC and toshiro, you can't go on supporting old systems forevever .

I suppose that vo detects the os in use at startup ? If so a pop up that says os 10. 3 / 4 / 5 required would indicate to someone returning to the game after a long hiatus that it was a os issue rather than vo itself becoming defunct .

Even on my G3 266MHz iMac, the second revision of said machine to ever be released, I was running 10.3 years ago. As a look back over the OS changes since 10.2, I'm not sure I'd want to use a version that old anymore. Stuff has just become too cool since then. 10.2 never let me disappear all my windows by pressing F11. I'm addicted to it for cryin' out loud.

Why did I stop at 10.3 with that old mac? Simple. Apple started releasing OS updates on DVD and that machine only had a CD drive. Fortunately for what you'd like to do, 10.3 was widely available on CDs. By now, it is probably even downloadable from Apple. Drop away guys!

That's an interesting thing about Apple, there's an amazing amount of software that you can run just fine even if your machine is well below the "minimum" system requirements.

just go for it devs, force em to upgrade!

Yeah... honestly, if anyone who plays VO has a machine that still is running OS X 10.2, then chances are that they either have machines that run a newer version of OS X or an entirely different OS altogether. Removing support for a rather antiquated version of OS X would allow the devs to spend more time doing other things that they want to get done, so I'm all for it.

My 1.2GHz iBook is running the most recent version of 10.4, and I believe my old iMac is running some version of 10.4 as well on it -- it's not booting at the moment, but that's a logic board issue...

Fine with me if you drop support for it.

Heh. I run 10.5.2 on my iBook G4. feels snappier than 10.4 did..

I've changed my mind. I'm re-installing 10.2 on all my macs, and demand that you continue supporting it.
