I have a whole "improved newbie experience" design for the game that implements all of the above suggestions, and a great deal more. But, I'm not sure when that's going to be implemented. Some parts are more major than others. Anyway, I'll do what I can to improve things before we have a greater user influx.
If you really want to improve the new user experience, you should make me a guide!
Nono, make me a guide! Then I can warp those that are foolish enough to give out a location on a public channel right to me!
I hope some of the noobs are serco, not just the usual itani gang with a couple UIT. Make sure it gives out the story line, and don't make the itanis always look like the good guys. Its not controversial enough. I probably would have been itani had the person who showed me this game not steered me into serco.
Lock the UIT and Itani nationality options for some time :)
Eat them!
That's my job.
I chose Serco specifically since they were a minority.
Maybe it would be good to have the backstory available from different perspectives, so that each new players gets a sense of why his/her nation is right. I would agree the backstory does seem to make it sound like the Serco are "bad" whereas the Itani are "striving for peace".
I would think most Serco would view Itani not only as a traitorous race, but also one that threatens the universe because they avow peace over natural selection and survival of the fittest.
I would love to see something along the lines of a history lesson, that becomes available to any new player that describes the past from a racial viewpoint, as it helps players get into a mindset, and adds moral ambiguity to the universe.

There's this one guy who said he was writing the Serco backstory...
edit: Actually, it was a small group of players, but they had little spare time, then the board crashed and all work in progress was lost.

Yeah, I would agree with the above, perhaps, each nation should present its view on how things happened, and why the conflict is still ongoing... It dont have to be a whole book, just the bare essentials.

Here are a few examples, illustrating, that it isn't necessarily what you say, so much as how you say it.
One newb that could not understand the tutorials, and thus I advised, that an adult in his house might could help him read.
Another wanted to pvp right away, and wanted to skip leveling, at which time I pointed out, that he was unlikely to be satisfied with pvp, when he could not even manage to kill a few dozen collectors to get to combat level 3.
Yet another newb insisted that he knew how to fly spaceships, and that any difficulty on his part, was obviously a fault of the game, leaving me to suggest, that he investigate the varied selections of turn based games available on the net.
A little bit of delicacy can go a long ways, and I hope that these examples of tact and finesse will inspire the rest of the community to be more helpful.

Loads of the people that actually are *remembered* players have been killed by me as newbs. Mystic, Bojan, most of blak :P, and I think I will carry on as usual, because the simple fact is...
...We should be nice to the little fish, till they think they can be big fish, just shoot em up a lil to let em know that folk can shoot em, then if they whine like babies, they are usually alts.
(as a side note, I bullied bojan as a 1/0/0/1/0 player, cos he got some bad advice from a "vet". he stuck around for a while.)
