Katarn - very true.

break & genka - Seriously. Who uses an 800 x 600 screen anymore? Here. There's a nice screen for $270 US.
Or this one for the budget-conscious.

Plug-in site fellas, I applaud your efforts, but I think it would be far more advantageous for the VO community to have all the information pertaining to the game gathered in one place. And the VO wiki does have a few years headstart ;-) (I did request a plug-in page be added to the front of the VO wiki half a year back, but it seems the bureaucrats and sysops never heard my cry for linkeage.)

On the other hand, I suppose we could just link to the VO Plug-ins site directly from the VO wiki mainpage, and achieve very near the same effect. Beautiful site design, in either case. If nothing else, you could always suggest that site design to be integrated into the VO wiki, Lord Spidey.

That is a gloriously ugly website. It doesn't work in wide screen or small-screen resolutions (which is to say, it only works in 1024x768). The code is ugly; you don't have an html element, and what you do have isn't valid for any version of the HTML spec. You use images for far too many things. The interface isn't consistent with that expected of a website.

I appreciate the idea, but if you're going to do something like this, do it better. Please.

I have a -laptop-, and my max screen size is 1024x768, and it didn't fit without horizontal scroll bars. if you want to buy me a new laptop, be my guest, but I don't have a couple thousand to drop on a new one right now.

LOL Break - can you use an external monitor?

Of course you, genka & roguelazer are right. NO website should force itself into a fixed resolution. That's poor design.

an external monitor won't fit in my recliner :) besides, I can't even justify buying a 200$ monitor right now, since I'd have to buy two, else the wife and I begin sleeping separately.. as in, me on the couch.. :)

Ion: we heard you... we just... got busy with school, all three of us. :(

I'll see if I can have something up this weekend. Just a few questions first:
- Should we have local downloads of the plugins (ie, from the wiki directly) or should we just link to the original locations?
- Should we have screenshots of plugins in action where applicable?
- Anything I didn't think of that I'm sure someone else did?

I say:
- link directly but also keep mirror on the wiki in case original site goes down.
- definitely have screenshots

Good idea, but since i don't like the way it looks, i decided to start www.vo-addons.com
it's going to be a java enabled flash only complex i-frame based website working on the xaraya cms, hope you'll like it.

My troll is tingling.

The VO wiki does need work, yes. Probably a complete overhaul. And honestly, it might look better as a full fledged website rather than a wiki. But it's a better idea to help the folks who maintain the wiki go that route rather than doing it yourself. Something about unity and small community and fairness.

What specifically do you think is wrong with the wiki?
May 08, 2008 moldyman link
Honestly? Wikis are ugly. Usable and great for information, and adding information, but functionally ugly.

I suppose it could be skinned but meh.

@MSKanaka: Ah, my bad. Sorry. I would not have wanted you to prioritize VO over school anyways (though I often feel the desire to do so myself ;-) ).

@moldyman: http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Compendium_Home is an example of a wiki skinned to look rather decent. Wikis are actually easily skinnable, but the people who use them (me included) often chose wikis for their great accessibility and ease of installation and setup (and lack of custom coding), which means we are often not inclined to pretty them up ;-)

That said, some custom layout work on the VO wiki would be a nice addition. If no other ideas come to mind, perhaps a direct rip of this very page, with the same backgrounds, text box frames, navigation meny layout and appearance. I'm almost absolutely sure Guild would not object.

But... but... the included themes are all nice and clean and optimized for usability...
May 13, 2008 Lord~spidey link
well since spine looks like hes gone for good i'm going to try finishing it on my own, too bad it wont have all the shiney stuff like user login and stuff to submit new plugins :(
May 13, 2008 moldyman link
That's all PHP/SQL work. Surely you're studying PHP (and PHP needs SQL, trust me, it helps a lot).

But... but... the included themes are all nice and clean and optimized for usability...

Nevah evah let a coder decide aesthetics. it's like an artist deciding code...

And if it's so easy, then why isn't it done ;_;

Hmm, maybe I should be really evil and create a wiki account and upload viruses over the current skins. Or better yet, stop shoving the Wiki down everyone's throats.

Some people do not like Wiki's. I'd also love a plugin site if spidey had nothing to do with it.
