Ten things I wish I had been told as a newb

... aka the ten commandments of VO:

I. Thou shalt not speak of any other games before me in channel 100.

II. Thou shalt not ask for help before doing the tutorial.

III. Thou shalt not say thy location in any public channel such as 100.

IV. Thou shalt not shoot anything in a monitored or guarded sector unless accepting of consequences.

V. Thou shalt not leave your nation's space unless prepared to be shot by other players. Visiting Deneb C-10 and/or B-12 almost guarantees players will shoot you.

VI. There is no victor in combat, only ship replacement versus ship repairs. Individual deaths mean nothing.

VII. Thou shalt not be recognized as good by anyone you have not soundly beaten recently.

VIII. Thou shalt not set your home station in grey space unless prepared to never get out.

IX. Thou shalt not seek the 'best' ship in VO; for there is none. Only different balances of agility, armor, weapons, and price. Bigger is not better.

X. Thou shalt never fly an unarmed ship, nor try to chat in an ion storm, nor chat while fighting.

Amen.

VIII is very true. I've been homed in Sedina for more than a year now, I think, and only sporadically (and very briefly) relocated that.

VI rocks. So damn true...

And I'm sooo happy that IX is true too :D

As a newbie, X. makes sense. But there are very rare cases where you don't need weaponry.

VI. There is no victor in combat, only ship replacement versus ship repairs.

VI is BS: Not a few times have I finished a fight while still at 100%, or with my opponent at the same.

Moreover, to have an RPG, centered around a war, where 'death' is nonexistent... yeeeaaah.

AMEN, borther.
And remember, noobs. Mutilate English and it shall be avenged. Language nazi, AWAY!

i think the prom is an exception to IX
Apr 04, 2007 moldyman link
Language nazis have their place. For example:

1 is r t3h 1337 haxxor lololZORZ!

This is when you call 1800-STFU-NUB.

On the other hand, correcting minor (quote unquote) grammatical mistakes or even nitpicking over the spelling of the word "the" is um...

Right, anyway. VI is an odd one. Sometimes, losing a fight is less expensive than repairing, like Valks or Proms in grey.

*tries to remember the last time he left Sedina*

yeah, i think it was when we were testing cap-ships and they spawned in nation space to make the trip to the borders. had to out run a lot of Serco valks to make it there! home is not what it used to be. :D

I pilot unarmed ships a lot, like when trading or racing or mining.

You need to add: XI: Death Means Nothing. (Or maybe as a corollary to VI.)
Apr 04, 2007 Aramarth link
I stand by VI, for the following reason. When your opponent is back in the same sector, with the same fighting ability, just like before you engaged him, merely two minutes later.. that isn't victory.

We- and I include myself in this- aggressive pilots may feel the elation of victory or the crushing weight of defeat, but no matter the outcome the only real results are who buys new. This is VO as it stands today, for better or worse.

death means nothing added to VI.

Yes, some of us fly unarmed ships. But as an instruction tool for newbs, X is best left in.

I agree, death means nothing, but victory means everything. If victory were worthless, there would be no point to PvP.

one day, far off in the future when you can build cap ships and stations with hordes and hordes of various items that take days to weeks to accumulate and then it gets blasted apart in 10 minutes by SCAR defeat and victory will have meaning

but id rather fighters stayed cheap and easy to acquire even when that world comes decades from now as after that happens I'd want to go spam rag the crap out of everyone I see for 2 weeks before rebuilding.

Victory fuels the ego.

This just in: When Aramarth came down from Dau, it is said that he was carrying two, not just one, vismetal plates with 20 (in total) commandments engraved in their surface.

But, alas! A rabid space cow (I fear that one is a maverick from my herd who crushed Whistler) took a bite out of the second one and, having acquired the taste for vismetal (I swear, I won't do it again), swallowed the thing whole.

These should be added to tips in loading screen.

Oh, and one more:

Deneb C-10 and B-12 are warzones, not just the place for newbies to get XP. Always expect to be fired by enemy players.

VIII actually means, if a noob sets home in grey he may not be able to get out because of unrats and player pirates. And even if he does, he will loose his new shiny ship he tried to get in no time

I know. But it's open to interpretation, is it not? Let's not have a religious war (again)?

I wish someone told me there were some nasty folk in greyspace when I was a newbie.
There I was, hopping along in my freebus.... and they came and bloody cured me of my nasty habit of breathing air in my ships cabin. And again... and again... and again...
Not that i could have really done something about it in my free bus, maybe just bleed on them. :)
