Haha. Fox's Firefly, Whedon's Firefly, Fly's Fire, Flyfox... I stand corrected, shamed and ridiculed. And a good deal amused ;-)

It's all very confusing, all those near-identical trademarks. It's probably some great conspiracy.

Hmm... back when Serenity was released I talked to some people about this show. (I don't watch TV so was completely unaware of it.) It sounded intriguing, and I was supposed to get both Serenity and the TV series from netflix and check it out.... I asked which people thought I should see first though, and I don't remember the answer... anyone want to make a suggestion on that?

With all this "excitement," I guess I'd like to know what the hell everyone is talking about.

The events in Firefly is set prior to the events in Serenity, chronologically. Serenity is the grand finale of Firefly, except... well, definitively grand, but not quite final. You'll see ;-) Just remember that the Firefly franchise is character- and drama-based sci-fi, with less emphasis on technology, space battles, the final frontier, and the sense of wonder that's inspired by alien civilizations, dead planets, bursting stars and epic storylines. I like both kinds, but the former is less common, so Firefly is a refreshing change.

If upper case is still following this thread, I'd be delighted to know what kind of shows he does like. Particularly, if he's a BSG fan.

Personally I thought the into to Serenity was awful, corny, and devoid of any particular talent. However, it picked up tremendously after that, and I found myself getting personally upset at the inteptitude of Captain Reynolds. My favorite quote is one of Jayne's moments, "Gee, sure would be nice if we had some grenades right now, don'tcha think?!"

As the Prof. put it, Firefly is so well written that I can't choose a favorite character.

well i just did return to this thread and read some of the comments since my last.

truth is, i dont watch that much series. i can't stand having to sit down at any given day/time to follow the next episode of anything. i'm more a "oh this looks interesting" and park my butt to watch that.

i watch a lot of historical documentaries, science shows, movies (marginal ones and a few block busters).

but to give you something to relate to, as far as firefly could be concerned, i loved

- bsg 1, 2 & 2.5. i've only seen a few ep of season 3, because of it's horrible time slot. i didn't have the patience to get torrent copies like i did for all previous episodes (wich i removed from my hd when they became available on dvd... i have it all). i'll end up watching season 3 on dvd i suppose.

- solaris. one of the best true-sci-fi movies since 2001.

- immortal (3d anim + rotoscopy + live action mixed). another masterpiece.

i have a rather large collection of dvds but these 3 titles should guide you pretty much as to what i like.

Solaris is very good.

Ion, my opinion is always correct, and one day everyone will come to realise this fact. ;)

SuperMegaMynt: Yeah, that's a great quote. Pretty much, my favorite character is whoever has the great quote at the moment, and very often that's Jayne. One of my favorite exchanges in the show is when Simon asks Kaylee what's going on, and with her innocent grin she says simply "Crime," like I would say, "nothing much, and you?"

Honestly, I really did like the show, it reminded me of Space Rangers,a badly done series on CBS that they dimwittedly premiered against DS9 and Bab5, and thus it got creamed - I liked it, but in all honesty it wasn't all that good, either.

Firefly was much better, imop, because of it's character based focus, but that never really got across to the intended audience because Fox aired the episodes out of order in the friday "death slot" and repeatedly pre-empted them, without notice in at least once case, for sports events.

That bein said, I wasn't all that fond of the movie, since it broke with a lot of what interested me in the series in the first place, and lacked the character focus that made the show what it was.

If you're going to watch it at all, watch the DVD set in order, and the movie after, if at all.

The whole 'perfect world' thing of Trek always annoyed me and turned me off to it, FF seemed more about real people, real problems, and the fact that sometimes the good guys don't win the day.

Then again, it could be cause I have a warped sense of humor - watching Jayne interrogate someone left me rolling on the living room floor clutching my stomach, tee hee hee!
