Holy schniekes. I'm there!

No.

Frakkin.

Way.

Oh god, I just made a gigantic mess in my pants.

On the other hand, this is made by the developer of a free MMO that I've never heard of before, their product looks like something out of 1997, and is Windows-only.

Oh....my...god... that would be awesome!

everyone i know said the serenity movie was the best "episode" of firefly.

well, after seeing that, i got so bored i never got any interest whatsoever in watching a single ep of firefly.

so, that game, whenever it appears (2008) can probably smash on flypaper and i'll never notice it's rotting corpse.

Of course, VO currently offers a wide variety of space and station-based activity -- enough for entire guilds to be focused on single aspects of the game. With many of the additions and changes mentioned in previous posts the VO 'verse holds great hope as an MMO.

Upper: I think you're trolling, but on the off-chance that you're not, I would urge you to reconsider.

It's not the Second Coming of Serco or anything, but it's pretty good television.

Cowboys in space?
Its a c movie material.

no actually i'm not trolling.

i really and totally disliked that corny movie. the actors probably have something to do with it too. the whole thing felt amateurish and i just couldn't get into the movie, with "i bet he's going to ... ah fuck... he did..." moments.

if there was 1 episode of firefly you'd recommend that might change how i see that thing, i'm willing to give it a try.

contrary to popular opinion, I enjoyed the firefly series. It's no BSG, Lost, or 24, but it definitely was better than any sitcom. The thing I don't understand is why Fox is so protective of it. If it was that much of a flop, then let someone else take it and do a better job with it.
Can't wait to see what the game would be like. There's certainly room for an epic storyline, but as an MMO... ? not sure what will come of it. Maybe they'd like to buy the VO engine to produce the game? :)

And it's Space Samaria Cowboys! hehe

I agree with u.c.

I saw an episode of Firefly, thought it "blah", and then I saw the movie, and (except for Kaylee), it kinda stinks. So many moments that goes "awww come on, can't you think of something more....creative?" The whole movie itself seem to be glued together by deux ex machina's.

And why do people take opinions against Firefly as "trolling"?

I loved that show, it had that droll humor that was apparent throughout Whedon's "Buffy" and "Angel" shows. The "not taking yourself TOO seriously" type.

A game based on it might be a bit much, but the show was frikkin' awesome. If the game will play on a Mac, I'll be there.

But... what kind of character to play? Perhaps a washed-up drunken pilot? Has that been done before?

Not well *zing*!

seriously tho.. firefly was one of those shows I'd watch if i couldnt find anything else better to do with my time..

I liked Andromeda myself tho.

I discovered Firefly about a year after it was cancelled. I'd never heard of it, and I'd given up on sci-fi TV. Then they did Serenity, and I heard about it first on Orson Scott Card's website, and he recommended it. Then all my coworkers were raving about it. I'm always naturally skeptical if everyone thinks something is awesome. I heard about the show, got all the episodes, and I watched them all in two days, because I couldn't stand to turn it off.

My wife rolled her eyes every time I mentioned the show, associating it with Star Trek, but I checked out the movie, and as I was watching it the second time she caught 30 minutes in the middle, and asked me to start it over. Now she's as hooked as I am, and she said that if she'd known it was the same guy who did Titan AE, she'd have been less resistant (that's a good show, too, that I resisted for a long time because it looked retarded, but my wife made me watch it and I love it).

Firefly (aside from having a super cool catchy theme song) is so well written that I can't choose a favorite character. It's a tie between Mal, Wash, Jayne, and Kaylee (damn she's hot, and yeah I know that means I'm kind of a nerd). The show is not completely original, I know, and I'm not complaining. Joss took ideas that have been done before, and did them right. I especially like the interiors, they actually look lived in. None of the sterility in Star Trek or the new Star Wars movies. And space was actually silent! In the show, anyway, that was the single thing that annoyed me in the movie, is that they lost that.

Because of Firefly, I want to be a space pirate.

Okay, well given that you're not trolling, I guess I can see why you wouldn't like it, having seen the movie first. The film was really just one big episode of the series that unfortunately didn't really do anything in the way of backstory.

Firefly was written to be sequential, and without the first episode to introduce the characters and story, there really was no reason to care about the characters and what happened to them.

Thus, I can't really do anything but suggest you find a friend dorky enough to have the DVD set, and start at square 1, with disc 1, episode 1.

I'm dorky enough that I will have the DVD set soon (anyone seen the awesome TV DVD sale on Amazon? Firefly's only $22 I think, and The Venture Bros. Season 1 is only $9!).

I see some people complaining that the movie was just an episode, shouldn't have been a movie. I'm glad it was like a long episode, because that's what I wanted to see. Also, they didn't cram 1 hour of material into 2 hours, they actually had something to tell for the whole movie.

They did an awesome job giving just enough backstory in an entertaining couple minute intro so that no one's completely lost, and those familiar with the show aren't bored and have new stuff to see. Of course, I'm not sure the rescue scene is completely consistent with the story given in the pilot episode, but it's good so I don't care.

Half of why the series flopped was stupid Fox didn't air the episodes in order, and they were kind of at random times. Like I said, I never even heard of the thing until over a year after it had been cancelled. If Fox wasn't stupid, the show would have caught on. It's not the first time Fox has done something like that, they axed Futurama in favor of Family Guy. Family Guy sucks, and so do the manatees that "write" it. Fortunately, I think Comedy Central has picked Futurama up for new episodes soon. Meanwhile the reruns are one of only three good shows left on Adult Swim (Futurama, The Venture Bros., ATHF). I miss Sealab 2021.

Okay, throwing my 2 cents in:

1) Firefly - Hesitant to watch it despite having access to the movie and all the episodes. Dunno why. Guess I'll watch it soon.

2) Titan AE - Very cliche-y and bland but strangely good and appealing. I might reget it. Someone tell me why it stinks in a way but still is good...

3) Futurama - Agreed. Very good show. Funny as hell.

4) Family Guy - Like a dumber Simpsons really...

What worried me a bit about news entry on multiverse.net was the usage of the expression "Fox's Firefly", and that Joss Whedon is mentoned nowhere in the article. After all, Firefly is in no way Fox's creative property. Fox was the network that aired and subsequently cancelled the show. That's about the extent of their involvement ;-)

But then I saw that in the article posted, Bridges, the Executive Producer of multiverse.net, does mention Whedon, and how he will strive to make a game worthy of Whedon's show. So perhaps this will indeed be interesting...

On a (just barely) related note: Prof. Chaos, whether Family Guy sucks or not is a matter of personal opinion. If you want to judge Fox, and label them stupid (something to which I wholeheartedly agree), better look at the financial impacts of their decision. Axing Futurama in favour of Family Guy was a very sound decision economically, even if you prefered Futurama. But going against your preferences does not make Fox stupid. Cancelling Family Guy, THAT was stupid, economically (something which they seem to have caught up on, since they've put Family Guy back on the air). Not saying I prefer Family Guy over Futurama, or even that I like the show, but whether a network is stupid or not should be based on their moral and economical decisions, not what brand of humour you prefer...

Now, cancelling Firefly, that was criminal. In that, I have no rational argument or neutral viewpoint ;-)

Indeed. Damn those Mozilla people for picking up that Firefox franchise! :p
