and i thought up a question...
which ship has the best displacement/thrust ratio?
which ship has the best displacement/thrust ratio?
Wouldn't we have to know the volume of the ship to figure that one out?
Probably the behemoth.
Displacing vacuum is a rather tenuous concept. (pun totally intended)
what use would displacement/thrust be?
Atmospheric flight.
Yes, it's a rather empty argument. (pun also totally intended)
the effect when flying through or mining gas nebulas in a distant soon™?
Displacement... as in, the (combined) space of the cylinders of an engine, at the lowest point of the revolution of the pistons?
Since when did we have internal combustion engines in space?
Since when did we have internal combustion engines in space?
who? me? has an internal combustion engine. My rocket ship runs on Pinot Grand Fenwick.
Yeah, OK I think I see where who?me? is going with gravitic engine ratings/rankings:
How about we gauge them in terms of gravitic displacement? Like, a big ship displaces "X" tons of water when it's floating. Gravitic engine displacement can displace "X" tons of ship, as in move that ship through space.
If your engine does not have enough displacement, you can't have a lot of cargo. It could move your ship when empty, but not when full of extra mass.
Gravitic engines with larger "Displacement" can move your ship faster, as in a force multiplier. Does this make sense?

1N thrust will move any amount of mass. I wouldn't want to be there to wait on it, but it will move.
lexicon, what you're describing is the thrust of the ship. As TRS says, 1N of thrus will move any amount of mass.... just not very quickly in VO terms. I'm thinking he wants a Thrust/Mass ratio, in which case check the wiki. I'm pretty sure they're up there. Otherwise, you could just calculate it out yourself by, surprisingly, dividing the thrust of a ship by its empty mass....

The whole page is thrust to mass ratios and discussion.

hmmm maybe my original question wasnt phrased correctly.
i think i meant to say length/(thrust/mass)
if that's not correct, then i want to know what ship can get to a speed where it is covering the most of its lengths the fastest.
oh wait i just remembered that there is a max speed and ships get there pretty fast so the question is really pointless.
sorry.

Hehe.
Some ships reach top speed more quickly than others, so it does have merit, though the only way to figure it out for sure is empirical testing. We don't have (official) numbers for turbo thrust on most ships, nor do we know the exact way that the "fluid dynamics" of the universe work that cause ships to have a top speed.
I can see it now: When ships are more customizable (via crafting, engine tuning, or adding racing stripes and a giant muffler), we can have drag races to complement the Tubes and the Deneb Run. Then we can find out who spends the most time/money on their ship and has the fastest reflexes for mashing the turbo button.
On that note, /me slaps a "Type R" sticker on his popcorn guns.

Oooooh. Drag-racing. Kickass.
We need a girl in a skirt with a handkerchief.
/me adds racing stickers for extra speed!
Little known fact: each sticker adds about 2.37% more horse power. Look it up, it's true.
