Reason I am Quitting Vendetta Online...

Hey,

I'm fairly new to the game and my combat skill level is not that high. I have been constantly harrassed by a player named "Dr. Lecter" since I started playing Vendetta Online.

From what I understand, this player harrasses quite a few of the other players on a regular basis, yet no action has been taken against him by the devs. The gameplay is cool, but it takes time to learn. Unfortunately, I get griefed on so much by players like Dr. Lecter that it's difficult to get ahead. This guy really takes the fun out of the game.

As a result, I have cancelled my membership. I am going to play Vendetta until my subscription runs out in roughly 20 days, and then I will move on to another MMORG where moderators actually enforce the Rules of Conduct.

Yawn. If Guild wishes to follow up on this seriously, please review the server side logs of my and Fasten's behavior. I also reference Fasten's generally foul mouth and poor interpersonal skills (while I have experienced this first hand, Shape also had a nice encounter with him recently) as reasons he's frequently killed: his penchant for randomly attacking people with swarms doesn't help much.

If shooting someone up in the levi sector, twice, after warning them that gray-space isn't safe, is harassment... then I suppose you'd better ban me.

[EDIT] Rogue, the kid's flying around gray-space in whatever ship he likes (thanks in part to a 50,000 credit gift by me, given days ago along with a strong suggestion that Dau or Itan would be safer and more pleasant)... this is a strong case of sour grapes. [/EDIT]

I'm sorry to see you so unhappy, RoadMan, but I'm afraid one of Vendetta's main selling points and arguably one of its best features is unconsentual PvP. I know that it can be frustrating to find yourself killed repeatedly (who here remembers when rails were first introduced and they used 15 energy and did twice the current damage? who remembers quad-rail hornets... blegh!) but, the fact of the matter is, if you stay, odds are very good that your skills will continue to improve. Unlike many other MMORPGs, Vendetta actually has combat based off of your physical skill, instead of some arbitrary level in the game. Once you get a half-decent ship (think Centurion or Vulture), there's more than a decent chance that you'll be able to at least give anybody who hassles you a good fight. If you stay, one day you'll find that Lecter will give you the jump and it'll be him being asked if he wants to buy back his last ship.

Now, I doubt the devs are going to ban Lecter for killing you a few times. Frankly, if they did, I'd consider leaving myself. However, I am imploring you to not take rash action and to instead continue playing and see whether or not you start having fun. If you want to, you will.

Yeah, what rogue said.

Also, until you are prepared to die repeatedly at the hands of someone more skilled, don't go into gray space, and be careful around the edges of nation space.

Had you complained so harshly if it was a certain type of bot that killed you?
Oct 25, 2006 RoadMan link
I don't mind dying repeatedly. It's happened on many occasions, by many different players/bots. But there's was a sense of fair gameplay with that. The gameplay that Lecter has been displaying does not fall into the category of 'fair' by any means.

Fair is not:

1) Camping outside of a station you know a new player is homed to and blowing them up as soon as they leave repeatedly - after they've told you they're just trying to leave grey space.

2) The only reason you knew where I was today was because i sent out a call over an open channel asking other players if they'd like to help me fight a leviathon as I was trying to gain extra experience. So you jump to that sector and wait for me. At no time did I engage you as I was busy fighting bots, even after you started shooting me. You did this on several occasions, and that's why I've had enough.

3) I suggest the Dev's listen in to Channel 100 occasionally. I am not the only one with a problem with this player. I am just the first one who is willing to quit because of it. MMORG's are cheap now. SW Galaxies is releasing a combo pack for $25. City of Heroes and City of Villains are $20 bucks. Point is, there's plently of games to choose from.

Personally, I think players like Dr. Lecter have little business criticizing the social skills of others, when his behaviour is more well-known and even more frowned upon by other players - this game's bread and butter. If this is a game where more experienced players have the option of picking on people who are just starting to play, it's going to turn off a lot of potential customers. I don't want to play a game like this.

I've paid for the rest of the month, so I'll stick around doing trading missions in grey space - at least until I pick up another game. But I am done with this game.

1) Factually incorrect--please see server-side logs of our interactions.

2) Factually incorrect: one of your group invitees was also kind enough to inform me of a sector that would contain fresh meat. As for kills, you died thrice while in Sedina C-4 with me. Once the Levi ate you before I could even land a shot; twice I shot you until you popped. These things happen.

3) I kill lots of people; a decent number of people kill me. I haven't heard any whining quite like yours on 100 recently. I have heard a massive number of Rules of Conduct violations, by you, committed against other players who have offended you in some way.

The bulk of players would probably rather deal with a merry marauder than listen to a stream of profanity over the course of many minutes because someone vaporized their moth. I could be wrong, but I think not. And you wouldn't be encountering more experienced players if you weren't continually playing in gray-space, now would you?

what you need is trader rage.
(Short version before you have to read this long story :> If your not willing to try to improve yourself and only want the game to hold your hand while you earn these pointless little numbers then vo is not for you. Don't whine and complain about it, find another way, try your damn hardest to kill the other person, or very politely ASK them to stop, might not happen but then thats what mines are for when they attack you next. And finally, not a single place in the rules of conduct does it say anything about how one can perform combat in the game, the game itself provides more than enough protection against "bad combat".)

when i first started i decided to join a trading guild. i was happy flying in my little centaur (did not have moths back then) going from sector to sector making a nice little fortune for myself. but sadly my tag gave away instantly the fact that i was indeed trading cargo. so pirates from far and wide would come and try to kill me.

they tried many a thing, from direct assaults, to placing lightning mines around stations. i died many a time, thinking it was just not fair, these players were much better than i. and there was not a single thing preventing them from killing me, no station guards, no empty sectors to hide in, i had myself and any help i could afford to pay for.

then i got angry.... real angry, so i grabed a fighter and flew out in search of my most hated foe, uncle dave.... that heartless bastage.

i found him and flew towards him in a murderous rage, my heart filled with hate and a longing to see his ship blow up just once!!! he killed me in 2 seconds. i logged off for a few days, but then i went back on and started fighting lots of people, friends, strangers and even a few of the pirates who killed me before, and i got better. and one glorious day, i killed dave while fighting him toe to toe.

soon after we became buddies and fought each other more for fun than profit or revenge (ok i say fought but it was mostly my slaughter)

shouting does not solve anything, go after what has made you angry ingame, with guns, rockets, anything! as long as you try you can only improve. crying cant make your reaction time faster, nor will it persuade your attacker to stop.

you may say its greifing, but there are more than enough game mechanics to see to it that greifing is down to an absolute minimum, and if you are civil about it you might even try getting a group together to hunt down the good doctor, hes killed enough to warrant a group going after him anyway :P.

I agree with hannibal, rogue and silent.

Especially if you are foul-mouthed (I'll take Dr. Lecter's word for that), I would not at all be inclined to help you at all, if I were on. Netiquette, adapted for use (with common sense) in Vendetta Online applies here, too. That is not to say that you should turn the other cheek, but to find other ways besides sulking.

Indeed, may as well call it what it is, though.

However, Fasten was just on tonight again, and I sadly have to back up Lecter's assessment of the situation.

RoadMan - You need to do a bit of trading and leveling beforehand. You can't expect to take on players who have been practicing for years at this game. That would be like taking up golf, then expecting to beat Tiger Woods, and being frustrated when he beats you by 20 strokes every time. (Well, Lecter's no Tiger Woods. Maybe more like Arnie Palmer.)

This game is not like other MMORPG's. It's based on real-world skill, and it takes time to improve those skills. If you put in some time duelling other folks and perhaps getting some pointers, you'll begin to get the feel for things.

But, if you quit, at least "Quitters Never Lose!™"

Uhh. This was moved before I ever saw it, or had a chance to respond. And I'm sure the complaining user has no idea what happened to the thread, and probably thinks we just deleted it, which is unfortunate.

Anyway, I don't know that there's much I can add to what rogue/silent said. The basic structure of the game is designed to allow open PVP, and that's a core tenet of what we do here. That said, relative newbies should probably not be trying to take on Leviathans, or flying around in grayspace, and that is happening in part because of a lack of game content in the "safer" areas of the universe, which is something I'm working to address.

But anyhow, sorry he may have left the game, and that I didn't have a chance to respond.

Honestly, the community needs a better way to police itself from players who actively seek out the newbies just for the "sport"* of killing them, like Dr. Lecter.

I've been ingame (or watching from #vrelay) and can remember many times where he has stated he was heading "to Dau" and not much more than a minute or two later, there's some character whose name I haven't seen before complaining about being killed in a Capitol station sector.

The problem isn't so much his behavior. That can't be helped. The problem is that there isn't a way to prevent it.

However, this is not to say I'm on Fasten's side. I've seen him mouth off publicly over 100, and I've seen a good deal of evidence that as dirty as his mouth is over 100, it's the prime example of cleanliness when compared to what he says over /msg. Part of the reason people attack him is because he irritates them and pisses them off. The other part of the reason is (probably) because they enjoy getting the rise out of him.

The typical suggestion of "go create a new character and this time stay out of greyspace until you're better equipped to handle it" probably wouldn't work in this case. Fasten's just pissed off at this point, and I doubt that even starting a new character would help--he'd just get pissed off again as soon as some person killed him in-transit and the cycle would start anew.

So... to sum up, we need a much better way of preventing newbies from being killed by players in systems like Dau.

I think that perhaps the old XP hit would be appropriate right now, with a few alterations, say, perhaps, the XP hit does not occur when the newbie is killed in a /duel, or even under a special duel accessible by the /mentor command. This alternative duel method would not involve the duel ratings, but would otherwise be the same as the regular duel. Increasing the severity of the XP hit might be a good deterrent--bumping it up from its static value of 1500 combat xp to something around 500-1000 combat XP for each combat license the killer has above the victim. So, for example, if a combat 14 player killed a person who'd *just* started out, downloaded the game and was taking the first tutorial mission, the combat 14 player would be penalized somewhere between 7000 and 14000 combat XP. More than enough to be a deterrent, as even with the Border Patrol/Skirmish and Hive Skirmish missions, combat XP is still the most difficult type of XP to regain when lost (or gain in the first place). Granted, my chosen numbers are a little on the high end, but I think the more severe the hit, the less likely someone is to repeatedly do it over and over.

Of course, someone could exploit this by creating a new character and pretending to really be a newbie, artificially keeping their levels low (I do recall genka used to ask a guide to reset his licenses to 0/0/0/0/0 every now and then)... but it could also only apply to, say, the first character created on a given account, and once that character hits the no-more-hit threshold (it was around combat 3, I believe), a flag is tripped in the account that prevents the XP hit from occurring on that account. Granted, that also doesn't rule out the possibility of those who have more than one account, but if someone's willing to pay for an extra account *just* to ruin someone's license levels/XP, chances are they shouldn't be here anyway...

Now, I just woke up, so if the above post is a little incoherent, I'll come back to it this afternoon and look at it. Time for classes!

* Dr. Lecter does actually refer to his activity of newbie-killing in Dau as "sport".

We need a better way to use nation channel 11

why no body use channel 11?

it's because in this game it's so easy to spy.
you can make a serco/itani/iut when ever you want.
there is no restriction.

channel 11 used to talk with all the nation players to make group, make tactic, share infos...
but since we can make a character in each nations
it's easy to spy it.

so people use channel 100 constantly to ask anything.
this game is not "choose your side" it's more "make a character with a fun tag nation on your name"
