Invincible Promys...

HumpyThePenguin I have, before, but I found it more useful to just avoid the nukes and use the hornet (with more weapon port) or use a warthog and use a nuke myself...
Apr 27, 2003 Suicidal Lemming link
Ok, let me put it this way.

Can a nuclear missle silo withstand a nuke hitting it?
Apr 27, 2003 Cmdr. Freeman link
SL, if you want nukes to go off in the tube and disable the tube, that probably isn't coming for a while, since that would require way more work than most solutions.
I personally don't see subsystem damage coming before something like 3.5 or 4.0

To everyone complaining that only the valk stands up against the prom—you're wrong. The valk is probably a ticket to hell unless piloted by an ace when attacking a prom. Every ship I have suggested is available to all nations. Let me repeat again: The prom is not meant to be taken down by any old, single pilot. It should require this concept called *gasp* teamwork.

DuctTape, I AM gold half the time, and use the same ships I use as blue. Try your ole maurader against a prom. If you have any skill and strategy, you just might come out on top

Icarus, yes, i just rearmed in 7 after killing nessus or sandokan or someone and saw you flying toward the station.... :-D

SirCamps, what about other nations? Do they have any ships requiring teamwork to be taken down? No? Didn't think so.

=/

Some of the devs hinted on new ship models. Either more specialized ships are on the way, or the current line of ships will be "updated." I can't wait to see 'em.

=)

Ya i'm looking forward to the new ships. I'm just going to let it go and see what the devs come up with. For some reason my DuctTape char got corrupted and won't load :/ so i'll be on a diff char for a while. Maby the devs have some ideas oh well. I'm still waiting to see how the weapons change :)

Blah. If you take away the Prom's large weapon port, it's useless as a bomber. You guys say it's fast and agile and can keep up with the other ships, but it can't. Try flying one in a dogfight, the only weapon you'll be able to hit them with is the advanced gatling turret (or a nuke, if you like cheap strategies). Also, even with a heavy engine, it takes a while to get up to speed. Maybe if you guys would use something other than an efficient engine, you could get away. As for Gold having all this money and nothing to spend it on, that's just crazy. I'm on Red, and I usually fly around in a Warthog or Centurion. I do just fine in them, even up against Valks. Although I die a lot, and have to spend a lot of time trading, Gold can make money a lot quicker than Red can. So, utilize Gold's advantages, build up money, and then work as a team. Teamwork never hurt anyone, and it's good practice working together when tougher ships become available for you to use.

I reckon that they should just take out avalons completly, either that or make them do less damage... They just take the fun outta the game.
Apr 28, 2003 Arolte link
Agreed, Corun. The avalons will eventually need to be used later on when we have massive ships, but now is not the time. It's supposed to be a specialized weapon used against larger ships, not fighters and bombers. Traditionally, the concept of torpedoes didn't even include proximity charges. Some did (and probably do), but for the sake of keeping balance and getting people to use it right, it almost becomes necessary for the darned proximity charge to be taken out. I think once most players realize how slow frigates and capital ships will travel, they would opt for direct hit torpedoes to avoid the current suicide exploits. Maybe even then they could make the avalons go a little bit faster, since they'll be easier to dodge in a fighter without that insane proximity charge.

I don't know what the devs are thinking right now, and I can't read minds, but I envision fleets of bombers being required to take down capital ships, while the opposing force will need to have fighters escorting the capital ship, trying to prevent these bombers from getting too close to launch those avalons.

I'm also happy to see that there's at least one multipurpose fighter (Warthog) in the game that can either be equipped to take down fighters, or take down frigates. It almost seems like a divebomber type configuration (akin to the Douglas Dauntless of WWII era) that can either be equipped with extra guns for taking down enemy fighters, or with torpedoes for taking down frigates (at the expense of using a weak air-to-air weapon). And yet it's not too strong (in terms of hull) as to dominate all other fighters. It's perfect. I hope to see more versatile ships like the Warthog make it into the game later on, 'cause they're hella fun to fly!

I've never fought icarus. I've fought beside him on acassion, but never saw him nuke anything. Despite the station camping, he tends to fight fair. The kazi nuker i was refering to was Freeman. HE runs at you and starts firing, then gets within 80 M and blasts 2 at you as fast as he can. then runs back to the station
Apr 28, 2003 Cmdr. Freeman link
So? What is wrong with that?
If I have a way to kill you and live, I'm gonna use it..I'm not going to give you a fighting chance if I can avoid it (so, yes, I'll let fly with a tac-nuke). I expect other people to do the same with me, so I'm always on my guard.

Abusing invincibility (like Icarus does) is not the same as having an extreme preference for a weapon.

Apr 28, 2003 Celebrim link
No, not quite the same. Just understand that both tactics may not make it into the final game in quite the same way manner as they exist in now.
Apr 29, 2003 Cmdr. Freeman link
Celebrim, nothing may make it into the final in quite the same way as now.

Arolte: No, currently no other ship requires teamwork. But Serco are supposed to be the kick-@$$ military people. Personally, I would be fine with only Serco getting frigates, as long as the Neutral got some sort of medium fighter. Itani, we have our valks. You ever see somethin getting attacked by 3 or 4 valks? It doesn't last long....

Back to topic: This just in!! The best prom killer in the neighborhood is the *drumroll* Centurian!!!! Yes, lady and gentlemen, the Centurian is your ticket to killing the "invincible promys."

Hi, my name is "Defense Ship 4," and I killed a prom in 8 with my Itani Centurian. I bought it in Sector 14, home of the best metal, and equipped it with a Gravitron uber-gun. If you know how to barrel-roll in 3 directions, the adv. gatling turret can't hit you, and it's only a matter of time until UncleDave's promy goes down (Or Icarus's, or Claydon's).
Apr 29, 2003 Renegade ++RIP++ link
hehe

me likes that

me always knew how to do a barrel roll in 3D, that is something I did learn in my time on the game :D

cheers

Its true, its true *sob*

Honestly, you just cant hit the damn things. I spent the best part of 10 minutes trying to shoot DS4, but dammit the gatling was too slow and he kept dodging my sunflares. Bastard.

Anyway, either that or a warthog is excellent against a Prometheus. But since they cant carry much cargo, less people use them.

Valkyries are a waste of time against them. Sure theyre fast, but not quite fast enough. Me and Eldrad have duels every now and again, and the prommy always triumphs :)

Still, with the improvements to the sunflares, youre lucky if you last long enough to get close up.
Apr 30, 2003 Suicidal Lemming link
No more nukes =)
Well i suppose you could use them but now they need much more precision.
Apr 30, 2003 Phoenix_I link
The Prom is Perfectly balanced, I killed 6 of them yesterday in a 12k hp ship. You just need the right weapon combo that is the most effective against your enemy.
Apr 30, 2003 Cmdr. Freeman link
Phoenix, a ship is not perfectly balanced just because you managed to kill a lot of them.
