Umm... can we have something, please? other than new shaders on a ship?
Its getting bleeding boring out here.
lets recap some of the problems shall we?
*Lag is now everpresent, I suspect due to some weird malloc issue.
*Simple balance suggestions, which would take 5 minutes to adjust, and another 10 minutes testing, are left entirely by the roadside
*momerath is the only person I see responding to anything
*new ships are touted in a "Gee, look, we're going somewhere" way, meanwhile the game itself is lacking in luster entirely.
Your playerbase right now, consists of Mac and Linux users. Essentially, people with no better games to turn to. But eventually, someone is going to invade this market, and I, for one, will welcome them.
I still get the impression that this game is all about building Inc's vision. My problem is that Inc has myopia.
Inc is still building this game off a vision he had YEARS ago. While I agree with many of the ideas, I think its vital that maybe he considers some of the new ones that people are suggesting, AKA easily codeable ones.
Its great to make a game that looks good, but if the gameplay is there, you'll expand it. The graphics may not be at market level, and lets face it, with the progression of the market, they probably never will be.
But the gameplay, the GAMEPLAY! It has the potential to be BETTER than anything out right now. And that will draw people in a way that pretty ships never will.
Edit:
Lastly, and most importantly, when EXACTLY, do you PLAY this game. Doesn't take much, take 20 minutes out of your day, and play with US. Get a true feel for what the game is doing. Maybe you do this on alt's. But if you do, I am, quite frankly, shocked that we haven't heard your opinions on a number of the issues.
We haven't seen a forum post from you, except one responding to other forum posts.
How do you know what balance is? if you're not in the game to see it?

What a newb.
I'm inclined to agree with Genka on this one....

It's starting to snow down here...
that post was for christmas, Its January 8, its been 2 weeks from then, what have you heard?
And these problems have been around for months. Years in some cases.
The lifetime of a game is not this long. Steady updates are NOT too much to ask.
And to lighten the mood a bit, from Vendetta poetry in the RP forum:
A Gaming sensation from Inc,
All the players arrive out of sync
But this devious smarty
Staged a Faux update-party
And the game is beginning to sink...

Indeed it's not.
Edit:
Hey, I have a great idea! How's about we all threaten to like, quit and delete our accounts if the devs don't send us bags of money at once! I mean, they depend on us for their income, so why not have them send that income right back, eh?! EH?!

Lets be complacent and keep paying 10 bucks a month... oh, wait, genka doesn't pay anything, that's right. He can AFFORD to be a jackass.
Damn right! In fact, the devs actually pay ME to deal with newb scum no-one likes but is too nice to do anything about!
Yep! Indeedy!

I'm afraid I am going to have to agree with Shape.
The rhetoric is getting tiresome.
I am sympathetic to the complexity of the task and the limited size of the staff. However, you have dedicated and talented people chomping at the bit to help in anyway possible and they seem to be given the brush-off.
I understand that this new update will open the floodgates of content and development but give us something besides pictures and promises.
My 2cr.

genka, let me refresh your memory:
You may not, however, post any material that:

How many times does it need to be said that the UI update has caused current client updates to be frozen until it is completed? It's been said many times on these forums.
Easily codeable features often times aren't the best features that will actually add fun and content to a game.
Incarnate has said a couple times that the graphic updates are things that are being done in spare time and don't take much time.

You know, I just realized that I may be handling this thing wrong.
You see, in my urge to re-enter the world of offensive fun after a month of absence I failed to realize that certain people, to no fault of their own, are simply ignorant of the actual facts. Now, it's not my place to enlighten the bunch of you, so I'm just gonna suggest that you head over to #vendetta, sit for a while, and soak it in. In between arguments about cars and ex-boyfriends you might actually pick up something worthwhile.

Hm.

Indeed. Without some players hosting events (i.e. Screwball's hosting of the Deneb Run, Obsidian's weekly mining event, Monk & Miharu's assorted little RP things they do, tumble's roid war, Shape's mirror tourney, and the Neural spike that is still out there) there would be nothing to do in this game. The players are the ones keeping this game going and generating content. Without the core set of players who are out there, I think this game will become even more boring. That's sad, and I think Shape senses that.
Shape's post shows that he cares deeply enough about this game to rattle some cages. Most players would simply go play something else, and I agree with him. Devs: Check your player info database and see what the percentage of Mac and Linux users is vs. PC users. I'll wager PC user subscriptions have dropped like a rock over the last 3 months.
That being said, I also have a lot of Faith™ that this next update will be revolutionary. It will also be buggy, but hopefully that will be just another thing to test for the hardcore folks.
So, the new Vendetta 2.0 (If that's what they're gonna call it) will be out at the end of this month. I have the patience to wait. I suppose that the real issue here is capturing the audience necessary in order to make money with this game. What playercount do you need to do that? It's certainly not 100.
[EDIT] Added tumble's ROID WAR and Shape's Mirror tourney thingies. Before I got on their bad side. Oh, wait... [/EDIT]

Umm, look guys, I've spent most of my weekend working on stuff for the new client so we can get a test version out as soon as possible.
I intended to make a newspost after our meeting this past week. Except, we didn't have a meeting. Andy was still on vacation on Tuesday, and various schedule problems have kept us from all being together since then. So, "regular updates" in terms of newsposts.. are really not too much to ask.. I just don't know exactly what's going on yet, so it's hard for me to write about it.
I know Andy's working on importing all of Ray's work from the mission editor into the new web-based editor dealie, and he's wrangling a lot of Javascript. I know Michael's still making mission stuff, and worked like.. a million hours last week and slept about 6. I know Ray's still working on the client.. and I know I've been doing little but make menu-mockups for the client and documenting my testing of what Ray has so far.
I'm hopeful that we may have a public Test within a week or so. But, again, I have to talk to Ray tomorrow about everything I did this weekend, to find out how long he thinks it'll take. I just, like 10 minutes ago, sent him about 500 lines of text (my testing notes / etc) and a JPEG mockup and blah.. and I need his feedback on why some stuff doesn't work (like say, SOUND.. which may just be disabled), and how hard it will be to fix/improve other things.
So, uhh, you'll have to wait until tomorrow (well, today-evening) for a properly informed response. In the meantime, umm, sorry we had a disorganized week.
If anyone's interested.. the client's shaping up pretty well. But, there's a bunch of crap that's either really annoying, or doesn't quite work right. There may still be a fair amount of "really annoying" when we do the initial Public Test, but I'm aiming to have it all smoothed out by the time we roll it into production.

Lemming, I really fail to get your point. If you could put your undying loyalty aside for a moment and maybe play VO again for a change, maybe you would realize that people are really tired of seeing bugs that have been reported month ago. If an UI redo is really necessary (which I still can't believe), let some devs work on it. But reserve at least one dev to maintain the production environment. We are the paying userbase, and right now we are getting zero developer time. If you have to split the code base for that, that for the love of god fork it. Its the standard practice everywhere. And no, I don't pay for the development of VO 2.0. I pay to play VO 1.0. And the latter is getting really boring and frustrating. The lag is becoming unbearable and I haven't read as much as a "ups, yeah, there is lag, we are working on it."
And now guides, flame me, I don't give a damn.
And now guides, flame me, I don't give a damn.
I haven't the foggiest idea what's up with the "lag". I have seen notices of network problems upstream of us. Not even our ISP, but their upstream providers.. I monitor our connectivity to certain intranetwork and peering routers and it's been up and down pretty unusally lately.
But, I don't know if that's related. Regardless, we'll look into it tomorrow and I'll post what we can find out in the newspost tomorrow evening.

And, for the record, two of the four developers *are* supposedly working on the production environment. Michael is working on completely server-side stuff, and Andy is helping him off and on. I don't usually read "bugs", so I wasn't aware of the complaint. But I'm kind of surprised that no one has responded. I can only guess that it's been some sort of post-Holiday hectic foggyness.
Ray is 100% on the new-client stuff, and I'm about 70% on it of late (other times less due to biz crap and whatever).
We have forked the codebase. It's just apparently a big hassle to build for the older target now, and no one expected the new-client rollout to take this horrendously long. Yay.

This should probably go to a different thread, but the lag is not caused by a network problem (at least not soley). I have seen chat lag (10s) while ships were still getting updated. Sometimes its the other way around. Chat is still coming but I don't get update packets. There are several posts under Bugs reporting the same observation (search for "chat lag").

Yes, saw that. We'll check it out.
I'm going to agree with Shape, Lebermac, Andreas, and Incarnate. Funny how that happens.
