Similar to the spacecraft design contest, but with missions instead. This is not about supplying code or anything like that. This is about coming up with interesting/original ideas about how to give out money, experience, or standing to a player for performing some task. Lets see who has the best idea!
How about this:
Our preliminary surveys show that sector ____ has large reserves of ______ ore. However, scouts reported that the sector was overrun by the hive, and were not able to confirm their sightings. Please procede to _____ and mine 20 crates of ______ and return it to this station.
reward: 500 combat experience, 250 each light and heavy weapons.

How about this one:
The Nemisis is headed into Deneb for its routine patrol, we need defenders/attackers (depending what side you're on) to protect/attack the ship.
Reward would go to the winning side, defenders if the Nemisis returns to Geira safely, attackers if they destroyed the ship.
How about something like 2500/1000/1000 since the mission can only be accepted when the Nemisis goes on it's patrol?

Basic Bounty Hunter Mission.
The Pirate <insert NPC name here> is terrorizing system <systemname>'s wormhole to <othersystemname>. Destroy the pirate and report back here for your reward.
Basically you have to go kill an NPC bot. Perhaps this bot is in a corvus Vulture ship. Or they could use a Ragnarok, or an SCP, or heck even an IDF Valk. The AI might need a little updating in order to make this feasible and challenging.
Advanced Bounty Hunter Misssion
The Pirate Clan <insertscarypirateclannamehere> is terrorizing system <systemname>'s wormhole to <othersystemname>. Destroy the pirates and report back here for your reward.
On this one you have to kill multiple NPC Bots. They use a variety of NPC ships, but mainly Corvus designs. Perhaps they have a Trident minifrigate? Dunno.

Also how about...
When you hail an NPC in an ion storm there's a chance they offer to pay you a sum of credits to get them out safely and escort them to their destination.
Once they make it to their station they hail you saying thanks and that they were carrying very special cargo for project <x>, and hey, <faction> could use another good pilot like you, find <NPC> that usually likes to hang out around <sector> if you're interested.
The player then finds the said NPC which starts another string of missions, getting them involved in project <x> which involves a lot of trade runs with NPCs from other factions trying to steal the plans, disrupt the trade convoys etc. etc.
Pretty basic stuff...

Mission: Birthday Party
It is the Senator's Birthday, and the ceremonies are about to begin. We need a competent pilot to deliver this gift promptly. You have 10 minutes to get this gift to <sector>.
<load 1 widget of special cargo>
Upon arrival to station, you are notified that your cargo is being scanned. It is detected that the cargo contains a bomb. The authorities see that, according to your log book, it is a gift for the senator.
<if more than 10 minutes go by, the widget explodes in your cargo bay and the mission is ended>
You are presented with 2 options: 1) Deny any involvement, and explain the situation. 2) Hit the turbo's on your ship and get the hell out of dodge.
OPTION 1: You are given the opportunity to prove yourself to the authorities, they see that your computer log backs up your story, but they still do not fully trust you. They ask that you bring back any information you can find to clear your name. If you abort the mission, fail, or do not return the info you receive a -500 to your faction.
OPTION 2: Upon leaving the station you are set to a temporary KOS and you must leave the sector.
<enter station strike-force from hell to chase you off> As with option 1, if you are destroyed or fail to leave and attack the SF, you receive a -500 faction.
Upon leaving the sector (either from option 1 or 2) you receive a message on your mission computer.
"Pilot, it seems that your mission computer was hacked by <NPC>, we are sorry for the inconvenience, and would be happy to pay you a reward for finding <NPC> we have a log of his flight-path and it seems he's in <sector (close to the starting station)>. Bring us any information you can about this pilot.
<pilot heads for <sector (close to the starting station)>>
Upon entering this sector, two NPCs (like cents in the BP mission) are sitting motionless. In the sector chat (I assume NPC's can be made to sector chat) <NPC1> says "Mission successful, the package was delivered." <NPC2> "Good, here is your payment, my master will be pleased"
Upon engaging one of the 2 NPCs both will return fire. When one NPC is killed the other will flee. Each NPC, when killed, will drop a special widget containing useful information and logs of the events. Returning one or both of these special widgets to the starting station earns <CASH + something in license levels> Obviously more for returning both widgets. Also you will receive a document to return to the "senator's" sector to clear your name, and perhaps a faction increase for returning the information...
END.
I thought this would be much more interesting than simple one way trips to or from a station.
It's a bit rough, but it can be expanded upon or just nerfed as well.
This could possibly tie into an expansion of the mission by finding who the "master" is.
etc, etc.

Repair mission, described here: http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/8747
Corporate Sabotage: This mission would begin as a regular Trade Guild Special Delivery from one of the UIT corporate factions of a datapad containing plans for faction special equipment. However, rather than completing the special delivery mission normally, you would take the plans to a competing corporate faction, who would analyze the plans & modify them so that they will yield an inferior product. The player would then deliver these modified plans to original destination for the special delivery mission. Following the delivery of the sabotaged plans, the equipment manufactured from those plans at the station they were delivered to will be inferior in quality compared with the normal stats, until the station recieves unsabotaged plans, either by a player completing a normal (non-sabotaged) special delivery mission, or by a NPC delivering the unsabotaged plans.

did anyone do the 'kidnapped daughter' mission in privateer 2? that was my favourite ever generated mission in a trading sci fi game, so my suggestion is a slightly modified version...
Mission: Payback (requires pretty high standing)
A local <commander's> customised <valk/prom> has been stolen. The only clue is a ransom featuring you in particular. The thief wants you to meet him at <sector>. Exercise utmost caution.
When you get to the location, there is one cargo container. When you pick it up, a message appears, the first of the clues. This clue would involve a mathematical puzzle (in the style of 'two trains are moving at 30m/s...') to reveal the next sector location. This would happen another two times then at the final point you'd have to fight a heavily armed prom/valk.

Apparently, the dev's mission maker editor thing is nearing completion or something. (It looks cool). If they could describe what it's like, or give us a format to put our missions in, that would be helpful.
Indeed it would.
Deep Retrieval
Fly into the heart of enemy territory and retrieve X from Y and get Z by returning it in N minutes.
You must be hated to take this mission. Oh, and they may know you are on your way.

What about this
Capitol Ship Sabatoge:
You are given a speacial stolen ID code that scans you as friendly, You may also change your name temporaraly. You are to fly to the capitol ship with a Plutonium Bomb that takes up a Hvy weapons port and Shoot the bomb at the capship. The bomb moves at 100m/s and does 1000000 damage. The other players can either A) Run away before being killed. OR B) Defuse the bomb With a special Bomb defusing Kit that costs 500000 creds. OR C) Shoot it. ANDRUN!. If nothing happens for 10 seconds a large Explosian 1500m Wide Kill anything it touchs instantly. Also for every ship that is killed from the explosian you get 1000 Combat XP.
Reward: 1000*Number of Ships killed=combat XP, 3000 Heavy Weapons XP,

With the new news post, I'm surprised no one has bumped this yet.
Prisoner transfer:
We have captured an infamous pirate, along with a large quantity of stolen goods in his possession! He is to be tried before a high circuit court, at Dau Senate in Dau L-10. We need your help to transfer this prisoner & the stolen goods, as evidence, to Dau Senate before the trial begins. The prisoner is being held in a special containment Stasis Pod (1 cu, 600kg), and the stolen goods have a total volume of 119 cu, and total mass of 59500kg (500kg per cu).
This mission would effectively require the player to use a Behemoth, in order to be able to hold all the evidence & the prisoner. The player would not be allowed to jettison either the prisoner or any of the evidence for other players to help carry, as jettisoning any of the mission cargo would trigger a mission penalty. However, if the player recovers the mission cargo & delivers it, partial credit would still be rewarded. There would also be a mission timer in effect, as the prisoner & evidence must be transferred before the trial is scheduled to begin. If the prisoner is delivered after the timer has expired, the trial must be rescheduled, and the player is only given partial reward. The mission would be offered at non-Corvus stations in Bractus, Odia, or Sedina, and would only be available to players with positive standing with the faction in control of the station where the mission was offered, as well as Respected or better UIT standing.
Pirate Rescue
This mission would be available at the same time as the Prisoner Transfer mission, above. This mission would be offered at Corvus stations to players with high Corvus standing. The prisoner has a subdermal tracking device, which sends location of the ship carrying the prisoner to the mission computer for the rescue mission every time the ship moves to a new sector. The objective would be to destroy the ship carrying the prisoner, and pick up the stasis pod to return to a Corvus station. Bonus credit and XP would be awarded for each cargo unit of the evidence that was recovered as well. Partial credit & XP would be rewarded for delaying the ship carrying the prisoner, so that the trial must be rescheduled.

cmon people, you must have more ideas than this!
if the stipulations of my oroginal post hindered your creative energies, make the reward for the mission anything you want.

Itani martial arts training:
a chain of missions awarding badges that are colored "belts" depending on how far the character gets in the chain before aborting the mission.
Each mission would be a duel between the player and an itani monk with the dificulty increasing with each mission. Ie. better AI or posably multiple oponents simultaniously.
To take these missions the player would have to have admired or better standing with Itani, and each system would have it's own mission (available at a capitle or barax station in that system) with between 3-5 "belts" awarded as you progress threw the mission.
The reward would be combat xp, and a badge representing the highest "belt" the character reached in that mission. this mission chain could also be used as the basis for the addition of shields.

To take this mission the player must have admired or better Serco standing, and taking the mission would decrease Itani standing.
This would be a mission similar to the trade guild mission, wher ethe player acepts the mission, and then choses from a list of posable assingments.
The assingments would range from "Patrole X sector for Y minuts" to "score X itany player kills".
The reward for this mission should be combat xp and a series of badges (with the highest replacing the older badge) representing the character's rank in the military.
This could eventualy be the basis for the addition of serco cloaking devises, as they would be restricted to decorated war veterans.

UIT Hive eradication missions (Combat XP Reward)
Instead of taking the standard "Advanced Combat Mission", which sends you on a mind numbing errand to kill as many bots as you can. I propose that the Senate, Union, or Mining Guild sends you out to a pre-determined sector with the mission of clearing the sector of all bots. Once done, they give you an update from your mission computer telling you the next sector to clear. Based on the pilots current combat xp level the sectors needing to be cleared will get more difficult, and the number of sectors that need to be cleared will get longer.
The bots of each of the sectors will not return once killed, and when the sector was deemed "Clear" you would see UIT miners NPC's come into the sector and begin mining.
Say you decide to abort the mission to clear sectors, the mission computer will give you two options.
1. Abort all mission functions (gain xp to date)
2. Stay and protect miners from bot retrobution. (Gain xp to date, xp tracker continues)
If #2 is chosen, your then able to stay in sector and defend the miners in sector from returning bots. You will gain combat xp per bot as long as the miners stay alive. If a miner is destroyed you gain no xp.

I haven't seen one of these... even though I think the general consensus is that we need one.
I have no idea what to call it... but we need to be able to get combat XP for killing queens.

Ineubis Defense Research - Leviathan Scrap Metal Recovery Mission / (Epic Part 1 {armor})
When you have reached "Pillar of Society" with IDR, a new mission will be available to you in which they will ask you if you wish to take part in a new defense contract they are working on to develop a new armor plating derived from the armor used on the Leviathans.
"It has been noted in previous salvage missions that each Leviathan is made up primarily of the strongest available material, but is then made into an alloy though some new hive developed smelting method, to create an even stronger metal. We believe it to be of xithricite origin but we will need samples from each of these systems leviathans to be sure." - IDR Scientists
Mission Objectives:
Destroy Leviathans in the following systems and collect the scrap metal that they drop for examination:
Helios, Ukari, Latos, Odia, Bractus, Pelatus and Edras.
//----
After each leviathans death, you would return to the station to drop of the acquired scrap metal for examination, and would receive a bonus of x/x/x/-/-. There will be one scrap metal type for each of the six systems. Since this is a mission, and not just free flying battles, the leviathan will have a special drop of scrap metal when destroyed that will be the needed scrap metal per system, (ie. helios_lev_scrapmetal, ukari_lev_scrapmetal, etc. possibly 5-10cu per dead Leviathan)
\\----
Once those have been returned to the IDR Station and have let the scientists perform their tests to determine that the Leviathans are indeed creating a new form of metal that is comparable, you are given your next task.
"Now that we have firm evidence that the Hive IS manufacturing a new metal alloy. We need you to harvest a batch of it for us. If you can successfully return to us 50 crates of new hive alloy, we may be able to outfit your ship with a new set of armor stronger then anything currently in production by any of the major nations. There is a varying degree in strength per your samples, it seems that the strongest come from Helios and Odia, but all are stronger then the current X-Rite Alloy, the scraps must be of the same type to be used effectively as armor. We await your delivery!" -IDR Scientists
//----
At this point you would then need to hunt down and kill x number of leviathans again, this time collecting the scrap metal and stockpiling it at the IDR station until you reach 50 at which point you would earn your new armor.
\\----
"Thank You very much for delivering the 50 crates that were needed to develop a working prototype of this armor. We will be installing it onto your ship as soon as we have fashioned the plating. Should your armor get too damaged to repair, simply collect us 50 more crates an we will be happy to re-plate your ship for you." - IDR Scientists
//----
As stated by the IDR scientists, if you should need to re-plate your ship due to death all you need do is take a new mission, available at any IDR station, post epic mission completion, called "Leviathan Scrap Metal Mission". At this point it does not matter which system you choose to kill leviathans in, as long as you collect the special alloys and have 50 for the final turn in of the same type. Remember though, some Leviathan scrap metals are stronger then others!
