Why does the UIT keep getting the shaft? They can participate in CtC, but get no benifit no matter which side wins, the n3s still go to only Itani or Only Serco. Now the border patrol mission. The UIT cannot get it. What do they get? When will they get it? Seems pointless to play a UIT character because you get more advantages playing Serco or Itani.
In choosing UIT you become exactly as the name implies, neutral. However you are only looking at the bad side of that. As you said no CTC/Border missions, but you are also neutral for both Itani space and Serco space from the get go. You can also become a pirate much easier, what with having sub factions within your nations space that you can keep separate standings with.
The UIT are officially neutral in the Itani/Serco war, if you want to participate in official aspects of the war, you should be playing a character that is a member of one of the warring nations.
But, I would like to see some more advantages for UIT players (just not military oriented). Things like international trading, with nation specific trade goods that can only be purchased by players in good standing with the faction that produces it, so UIT (who should be more likely to have good standing everywhere) will be able to trade to & from more factions.
I'd also like to see the faction standing system changed to give UIT players a bit more advantage there. Currently UIT have the best starting values for faction standing, but that's their only advantage w/ faction standing, and with how easy it is to raise faction standing the starting value doesn't count for much.
What I think would be cool for faction standing would be something like this:
Itani or Serco players:
For every three points of standing they gain with their home nation, they lose one point of standing with the enemy nation, and for every two points of standing they gain with their enemy nation, they lose one point of standing with their home nation.
UIT players:
For every five points of standing they gain with either Itani or Serco, they lose one point of standing with the other.

I'd make it much simpler for factions (I'm told that something like this will happen eventually):
Itani + Serco <= 0
Corvus + TPG <= 600
Serco + UIT <= 1800
etc.
Itani + Serco <= 0
Corvus + TPG <= 600
Serco + UIT <= 1800
etc.
I agree. It's one of the reasons I left UIT. It's just too boring. I never had the chance to really do much, if any, group stuff together with people of that nation. And even if I did decide to volunteer for CtC or whatever, like it's been said there's really no benefit from it aside from getting a few cargo crates and some PKs.
UIT's special ships aren't really... well, special either. The Warthog Territorial Defender is hardly worth the effort of purchasing, due to the new (well to me at least) mass system and the bulkiness of a GT. So unless you're looking to trade or mine a lot, there's really not that much UIT has to offer for combat oriented players when all you've got is the Marauder.
True, pirating is made easier due to location, and people of the UIT have the advantage in faction standings (for traders). But essentially all that nation has going for it is the ability to get rich quick. And seeing how money becomes unimportant after a certain point, it does get to a point where a UIT pilot's daily activities just become routinely boring and pointless.
I'm personally not interested in being loaded with billions of credits in my pockets. I'm interested in action. Combat, cool ships, and cool weapons is what keeps me playing and wanting more. So with the help of the devs (thank you so much btw), I had the opportunity to switch over to Serco to satisfy my playing stye.
Others may not feel the same way. Maybe the UIT is fun for some people. But admittedly there does appear to be a lack of missions for that nation which are unique or exclusive, which makes the other nations more fun. So maybe when those are in place and when money has more meaning, we might start to see UIT gain popularity. But for now it just doesn't look that appealing.

@roguelazer:
> Itani + Serco <= 0
That would work for Itani & Serco players, but I think UIT players should be able to get better than that, say Itani + Serco <= 1200.
And, that way of doing it isn't really much simpler, especially for going through the transistion from the current system. And I do prefer my suggestion over this, I really don't have a problem with players having good standing with both Itani & Serco at the same time, I just think it should be very difficult to get (and easy to lose).

If that's the case, I wouldn't think UIT would be the best nation to roleplay. The way I see it, UIT seem to be stereotypically wealth oriented (there are exceptions of course, but UIT do seem to fit that stereotype).
I do agree that mining & trading as they are now are rather boring, but I think there's several ways they could be made more interesting. International trading, smuggling, piracy, and other things would add more fun to trading. IMO the funnest part of mining is the scouting to find the good 'roids to mine, but that doesn't last long, once you find a few good spots you're done. I think I've heard that 'roid composition will eventually change as a 'roid is mined & other factors come into play, so that should bring the exploration back into mining, which will help.

It depends on what you choose to do with that money.
Yeah, but I think when people hear neutral, they assume they'll have the ability to spend their time on something other than an intergalactic war... somethin FUN like TRADING...
well, maybe the last part was a lie.
UIT get jack, there is absolutely no advantage to being neutral. It's 2 bulk trade missions with several factions... and that's it, bupkis, finito, niente...

Well I hear the Serco are desperate for recruits so they will welcome you with open arms.

naw, i dont like that idea, because some of us would like to get opposing special ships to use. it would take forever just to try to get them with that kind of system.

UIT can travel everywhere!
they are able to move on all the whole map of VO.
It's their advantage.
UIT is used to be traders-neutral players.
while Serco and Itani have the main "WAR" gameplay.
simple and easy
so stop complaining

re Blacklight's post: "forever" is a figure of speech, it takes something like 4 hours to gain 1000 standing points
re Nya13's post: it takes less than 15 minutes for a Serco or Itani to be able to travel everywhere (ie shooting a few bots to get above -601)
re the whole thread: I don't see why UIT cannot "officially" take part in the serco-itani war and get the corresponding benefits; if they should not for some RP obscure reason, then they should have a few specific bonus/missions for balancing playing interest.

Yes, UIT doesn't get much to do; But, it will all flesh out once the new mission tools are in place. It's really just a symptom of the overall lack of content.
I would like a UIT item that Serco and Itani can't buy too, but that's prolly just envy speaking. How 'bout a ultra-heavy battery?

There's a huge misconception that the UIT is solely reserved for peaceful traders and miners. I mean it's an ideal nation for them, but it is by no means exclusively theirs. If you read into Vendetta's official booklet (one that came in the retail version) you'll find that the UIT is essentially open to anyone who is looking to become an independent or freelance pilot seeking to gain profit. That includes pirates, mercenaries, and bounty hunters as well. There's also mention of UIT being a safe haven for outcasts of other nations/factions. My point is UIT has the ability to have those war-like characters in it. The problem is there's very little motivation to get involved in that option, because there simply are little or no benefits as there are with the Itani and Serco nations.
Re pirates, there is currently a strong incentive to be UIT (as silentsuicide pointed out in this thread): a UIT with bad standing can kill anybody, have access to the best interceptors (Valkyries, IBG and SVG) and dock with 90% of the stations around.
If the only advantage to being a UIT is to be a to travel everywhere and trade and mine better, then give the UIT special trade and mining missions that are NOT available to Serco and Itani nations. If the Serco/Itani can have dedicated missions/events then so should the UIT.
Such as:
Ambassadorial Safeguarding missions - Where the UIT Senate is holding a conference at a station in neutral space (uit/grey) for negotiations to end the war between the Serco and Itani. It's the UIT pilots job to defend the station from serco/itani forces trying to stop the talks.

UIT CTC - Same scenario as the normal CTC only it's between non-UIT stations in grey and UIT stations. Shorter distances to target stations but more heavily attacked by pirate ships flying vulturious, mercenary mauds, etc. Potentially, Itani/Serco "could" participate, but would not have any benefits to them. As reward for this, the UIT would get a discount on goods sold in Grey space or non-UIT stations if a certain quota is met, if not, prices in Grey skyrocket and prices at Corvus stations drop (but would still remain higher then anywhere else).
UIT Border Patrol Mission - UIT must defend the borders of UIT space from pirate incursions. This missions would act exactly like the Serco/Itani border missions only it would be against pirate ships instead of Serco/Itani ships.

Most of these were combat oriented simply because they are to be parallels to the missions that the serco and itani get for combat building, there could be others more oriented to mining or trading, specific to UIT.

I happen to think that keeping Serco and Itani specials exclusive to those who are in great standing to *only* their nation is a good idea. It keeps people from being "goodie-goodie" players who are friends with everyone, even warring nations. So yes, for an Itani or Serco player, Itani+Serco=0 is a good thing.

I'd like to see UIT get a group trading mission. with BIG faction and cash rewards like the UIT should be good at. I also think the UIT should be the only nation with the ability to switch sides.
If a neutral wanted, he/she could take a serco/itani mission that builds standing with that nation, once the neutral gets to +900 or so, he/she will have the option of becoming a serco or itani.
The counter-active standing system would have to be in the works here of course, a neutral should not be able to easily switch back and forth.

I'm not sure if it's that easy to become a genetically and mechanically enhanced humanoid that Sercos are supposed to be.

Actually, I would agree with you, that that should be possible, but IMO it's WAY too easy right now. What I suggested would still allow people to get good standing with both Itani & Serco (UIT players especially would be able to get both), but it would not be easy. Which is how I think it should be.
