Pirates failed math?

Drop you cargo, pay me 100k, or be destroyed.

Ah, the pirate. I kinda like it when I see these hails. But wait a minute.... Did he just say 100k? That removes all choice from the equation. The total value of cargo in my hold is 31200. The value of the mission is 28800 (which I can still complete post mortum, perhaps even with bonus if I'm quick, because it's procurement). What kind of pirate asks for 100 000? The kind that failed math, that's who. I might go for 20k, or even 30k if my cargo is plasma core or something. Forget 100. Dumb.

How many successful cargo runs do you do between running into a pirate?
May 05, 2005 harvestmouse link
dunno... that behemoth full of lux goods I ferry... but running is pretty easy, I think they should just attack me.

The best thing to do is come to a halt, wait for the pirate to get real close to you, say something, wait for the pause as they type, then unload.

If you're lucky, you'll see:
[100] *Pirate ok, drop it dddddddddddddddddddddddddddd
Starfisher destroyed Pirate

I thnk I encountered this pirate. The price changes, I was asked for 100K and I didn'tave it, and had an empty ship at the time so I had no cargo. I died. Oh well.

I did want to pass through that Wormhole so I ran into the guy again. This time the price dropped to 50k. I still couldn't pay so I died.

I only get mugged once in a great while. I have no problem paying a reasonable toll to a pirate with a reputation. I'm not paying 100k to anyone, though. Not unless they're, like, giving me purified xith in return. See, the point is to make it worthwhile to pay. You've got 2 options while pirating:

1. You're solo. You DON'T want my cargo. You want cash. Make it worthwhile for me to wire some creds by asking for no more than 20k. If you get paid, give free passage for 2 hours or so.

2. Bring a buddy in a Beamer. You DO want my cargo. Forget the cash. In this case, blowing me up is just as good as anything else, so let the rockets fly.

I have never encountered #2, which is sad. It's always #1.

Speaking of which, any pirates want a cargo pilot? ;-)

well, see, since noone pays and running is easy, and everyone has a shitload of money, asking for 100K isn't a bad idea. I know people who ask from 10-100K, and, well, as part of roleplaying, you can imagine your life being worth something.

if not, just run, stop arguing. it's what 99% of the people who are about to be pirated to, successfully.

I used to charge crackbotters 120k for an all day pass back in my pirating days.
May 05, 2005 Shapenaji link
I usually charge 25-50k.

But, theoretically, you're also forcing them to lose standing, and the time involved in travel can be very frustrating too. So it could go as high as 100k

Hehe... Pirating is simply against the law (Galactic Trade Agreement 4224, Article 266¥ø45, chapter Æ73, paragraph 4¥E...)

You pirates, you're *all* under arrest! Assume the position!

you do make a lot of money between getting pirated, and most pirates will let you slide through after paying 100k. so you are in fact paying for use of the trade lane for an unspecified period of time. and had you payed up you would have seen that and wouldn't have made this post. and while your cargo may only be worth 50k with mission payment, your ship is also a cost to consider. not to mention time lost to replacing said ship and cargo and trying to get through again.

so in summery.... pay up and trade happily, or get harassed. :)

oh, and some of us failed grammer and spelling as well.

i rarely have more than 100k, i only trade as needed to maintain a semi constant flow of ships for other stuff.

personaly i think the pirates would do well to just attack the traders rather than give away their intention to attack by demanding tribute.

but to each his own

Lord Q: I agree, it still seems really dumb to me that pirates bother to hail, the surprise of just letting the guns fly would be much more realistic. That said, I have seen endless complaints and whining when someone doesn't hail, so I guess it's become kind of a good gesture for the pirates.

I tried pirating a few times without much success, it's just painfully hard to catch anyone, even centaurs have enough thrust to get away with good piloting.
I wish they were like that in the alpha, I got pirated like mad in centaurs before I learned of the maud hidden in sector 18. :D

I appreciate a hail, myself. Otherwise, how do I know it's not just the taxman? I also appreciate a pirate who is prepared to take cargo as booty. Not a matter of math - it's a matter of style and role playing as much as anything else.

I havn't done much procurement, so i havn't meet very many pirates. my behomith's single encounter with an aggressor, the guy didn't hail, he just started shooting, I ran. I think he was annoyed at hitting my concusion mine, because he followed my jump and tried to stop me from getting to the station, until the station guard drove him off.
