Ability to mask your ship on radar using asteroids
It would be nice to be able to get close enough to a 'roid to mask another player's ability to target you. While the "u" function could still show you in-system, you wouldn't be findable at least as easily.
Great game - great potential. Keep up the good work, devs!

The aforementioned thread is a good read if you've got a few hours to spare. There's not much to add (even though an abbreviated version wouldn't neccessarily be a bad thing), except for the offhand literary reference.
Stephen Donaldson, author of Thomas Convenant and - thankfully - a few good books as well has written a space saga known as The gap cycle. The idea of powering down (and a lot of other concepts in the VO universe) is covered nicely - in a way it's even central to the story - in case anyone wants some good scifi.

you all know that every time anyone makes any suggestion, I can hit the search button and pull up at least one thread where I participated. but I don't do it. why? discuss.

'Tis a shameless plug, but it kinda feels relevent when speaking of "Asteroids" and "Not on Radar..."

Cele - thank gawd you were brief on this thread - increases the chances someone of import will respond! I saw no definitive resolution to your "paid by the word" tome. I did, however, like CrippledPidgeon's suggestions of jammers, stealth and sensors, so thank you for linking that thread.
The "power down" feature Marksman suggested is a neat idea as well.
Has any of the devs given this topic much thought?

If indeed they have implemented object occlusion testing, that can only mean they intend to use this information to affect the radar. (well, there could be other reasons, but this seems like the biggest.)
I would like to see *some* roids (not all) that scramble or mask a radar signature. I remember Freespace had a sensor "jitter" when in a roid field that interfered with sensors. You could tell something was out there, but you couldn't get a lock until it was relatively close. It seemed like the long-range radar blips bounced off multiple roids to confuse the radar. (Maybe a radar upgrade could filter these things out.)
Some very dense roids should mask a signature entirely, or if the aforementioned power-down procedure has been done.
The possibilities are endless, and worth re-discussing.

Has anyone noticed that you can shake some of the nastier bots off your tail in an ion storm by flying between roids? I've actually had them lose interest and wander away until I re-emerge.
I don't know if they have occlusion detection for radar. I've asked them many times in the past, and they've always said no. But what do I know?
Whistler: That's because their "maps" make them avoid roids by a fairly large margin unless they're mining.
