Oculus Rift S HOTAS/VR Tutorial

Oculus Rift S controllers are not yet (at the time of posting this) supported well in VO-VR and as Moonz can attest flying with mouse and keyboard in VR is nauseating so the only two practical ways to play VO-VR in either Oculus Rift or Rift S is either with a gamepad or a HOTAS setup.

I prefer a HOTAS set up since I can't see the keyboard with my vr headset on so I want as many buttons and hat switches as I can possibly bring to bear to minimize how often I'll have to lift my headset to see the keyboard.

I don't have a gamepad so if that's the setup your looking for maybe touch base with Moonz since that's what he uses with his Oculus Rift. Or Moonz, Maybe you could post your own tutorial on how to do that? I suspect there's probably more people with gamepads than HOTAS.

However If you do have a HOTAS setup or plan to get one I'll detail the steps below to get It working with your Rift S. I suspect it's probably the same for the Rift but as I don't have one of those I can't be sure.

In the interest getting as many commonly used commands off the keyboard and onto buttons as possible there's a plugin Luxen made to allow you to bind launch to one of the buttons on your HOTAS. http://www.voupr.com/plugin.php?name=bindlaunch

Optional but not necessary, you may want to setup all your bindings in non-vr mode first. I just think that kind of tedious work is easier that way.

Now you're ready to Launch VO in VR mode so launch VO like normal and when asked "Do you want to run with VR support?" click yes obviously.

Once VO_VR is running this part can be a bit janky if there isn't already a pointer coming from one of your motion controllers (I don't remember if that's on by default when I wrote this) as you might have to tab/enter your way through settings which means lifting your headset just a hair so you can see your key board and get one finger poised on the tab key then put your headset back down and feel your way to the enter key with your other hand.

Now hit tab to cycle through the interface elements until options is selected then hit enter, then tab to Advanced and hit enter then tab to VR and hit enter.

Or if the motion controller pointer is already there then just point/enter your way through Options>Advanced>Vr.

The first option on this page is a checkbox called "Use UI with Headtracking" You want that to be checked if it isn't already. Once this is checked you'll notice a pointer coming from one of your motion controllers. This will replace having to use the tab key but you will still have to use the enter key.

Optionally, you could take the batteries out of your motion controllers while leaving "Use UI with Headtracking" checked and this will force VO to fall back on the Gaze style pointing which I prefer since that means I don't have to take a hand off my stick to pick up a motion controller. I haven't found a way to select the Gaze style while leaving the batteries in yet.

Next is a pulldown menu called "Steer with Head Tracking:" since you're using a HOTAS you want this set to OFF because you'll be steering with your joystick.

Everything below that is pretty much optional so pick what ever you want then gaze or point at "Reset Orientation" button and hit enter. That might not be necessary but it couldn't hurt. Without doing that you may find when you get in your ship that your HUD is behind you or up to the left or in some other weird position. Might as well avoid that now.

Then point/gaze at "Apply" and hit enter and then "Okay"

Then you'll have to Gaze or point/Enter your way through the login and character select screens to enter the VO universe and as long as you remember what button you bound launch to you should be ready to launch and experience VO in all it's VR glory.

And Thank you Luxen for helping me work all this out. Here's hoping no one else has to.

While the above works for the tutorial poster, you definitely don't need take out the batteries out of motion controllers as a requirement to play VO in VR using Oculus Rift/Rift S (source - myself).
