Best format for Oculus Quest

I'm upgrading my Go to a Quest and wondered if anybody else is playing on the Quest ?

What's the best format, the Go version sideloaded or using the Link cable and playing the PC VR version ?

I'd love to see a native Quest version e.g. like the Go version but with enhanced graphics, 6dof and dual controller support.

I've seen a scant few people play the game sideloaded (requires a controller, because I don't believe the quest controllers are compatible?), but I've never heard of anyone using the Oculus Link yet. the game officially supports the original Oculus Rift, which is supposed to be Rift-S compatible, so you'd assume the link would work (again, you'll likely need a non-vr controller), but there are no guarantees.

if it DOES work, come back and let us know, please~!

EDIT: I've been told on discord that using the Oculus Link to play the game in PCVR mode does work. I don't have details, however...

I extracted the APK from the Go and installed it on the Quest and it was so much faster and I got a huge surprise: there is actually a section for the Quest controllers so somebody must have done some work on this !

Unfortunately, the right joystick didn't seem to work so I couldn't actually turn the ship. When I used my Go, I used an xbox controller and had a slightly different mapping maybe that has screwed it up. I was hoping 6dof might work so I could look over the chair out of the back but it was 3dof and as I got up, the chair rose with me - never mind.

Sideloading is easy on the Quest and is quite accepted now with an alternative app store called SideQuest so Guild could defintely make a few tweaks and distribute it on there.

It would really only need very trivial changes to make it great :-
1. Fix the controller problem,
2. 6dof - probably just a recompile with the right settings (easy for me to say :))
3. Use a texture pack from PC - feels like the hardware could handle more than the Go / GearVR version.

Then you can just host the APK directly and create a page on SideQuest.

Please don't do that.

I wasn't suggesting that anybody do that other than Guild Software. I was just thinking that it's a good way for you to reach this market with very little uplift effort from your great Go version.

I'm a long term subscriber and very interested in using the Quest. @SlashGorden, did you figure out the issue such that you are able to use the Quest now?

I had been playing using a Pixel 3XL using Daydream and a paired xbox controller, but I use the Quest exclusively now for VR. I can't use the Link cable at the moment as I only have a Nvidia GTX1050 graphics card which is not quite supported by the Rift software, it needs at least a 1060. But I did buy the Virtual Desktop app to I'll try that to play the PC software but i doubt that will be the experience I'm looking for. But I'm much more interested in a Quest native app, particularly with 6DOF and the native controllers which are excellent. With over 1 Million new Quests sold in the last few months, they can't keep them in stock. I'm sad not to see Vendetta Online in the Quest store. Quest users are pining for a good MMO game like this.- missing revenue there guys!

I'll try pairing an xbox controller with the Quest and sideloading the GO APK at mentioned. Anyone else interested in this?

Quest have significant players base and they craving of good MMO game. I spent a lot of good time in VO via Go but since I already upgrade to Quest I can't play it anymore. Still keep my hotas for the day you support it ;)

I played VO yesterday for the first time in 6 months - I'd forgotten how good it was ! I played on the Quest using the APK I extracted from the Go before I sold it but, with a Bluetooth game controller, it works flawlessly.

@Incarnate, you guys need to get onboard the Quest platform because Go is dead now. Apparently, Oculus, are bringing a new uncurated appstore to the Quest, like sidequest, especially for titles like this. In the meantime you should look at Sidequest.

Would it be possible for an end-user (i.e. myself) to replace the texture packs in the Go APK with those from the PC to see how well it performs on the Quest ? I noticed the auto-update thing going on where it downloads the latest binary files and also that it checksums those files so if you modify them, it re-downloads them. I guessing modding the game beyond using the LUA api is discouraged ?

@Incarnate is there any appetite for you to take another look at the Quest now that the Go is discontinued, Rift is discontinued, there's a Quest 2 out now and uncurated ganes are supported via SideQuest ?

I totally understand where people are coming from, based on what information is public.

However, this has never been an issue of our "appetite", or our awareness of the state of the VR industry.

I am not ruling anything out, but I don't have any further comment at this time.

I saw a vid where someone got this to work on quest2 sideloading it...
I can get the apk found for .535 to load but it tries to update and can't find source files.
Does anyone know where a good apk can be found online?
Contact me ingame or on discord ... I will check back here too

ANY oculus go apk is not compatible with the quest 2; if its the video i'm thinking about, that was a quest 1 model they sideloaded on. **RIGHT NOW** (as we don't know if/when the devs might work on a port) quest 2 users need to use the pc client of the game with a link.

What about the apk from 2019 for the Oculus Gear VR? If anyone has an apk which worked for the Quest I would love to try it out for the Quest 2.

@SlashGorden could you somehow share this apk which still works? I would love to try VO in VR on my Quest and I get error when sideloading the latest version.

I've done a bit of research on this subject, and the Quest 2 cannot install GearVR or Go .apk files. It does use Android, and it does use .apk files, but part of the Oculus framework is changed, and dependencies checks will fail, even if you extract the .apk and install manually.

I just bought a Quest 1 for this reason, and it does work great there. You can get the APK yourself very easily if you would like to try (see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIzCThapGqY&t=0s&ab_channel=OPENPCreviews ) but you will be wasting your time and money (its $3 for the GearVR version)

Only way to play on the Quest 2, as of right now, is to use the PC version and the link cable.

@Ohm

I had succes installing some older versions of my GEAR VR apk's I had backed up, like the Minecraft GEAR VR v1.16 so it should still work if you use and older version of the game. The problem is finding an old version. The version you get from the store is not supported on the Quest.

I got Vendetta Online VR 1.8.405_V154 (GEAR VR version) to work on my Quest 2, you just have to disable wi-fi to prevent it from updating.

Hmm that is quite interesting actually MFE, I may have a few older backups too. Might be easy to stop it auto updating too, if I can find one that works that is. I recently upgraded to the Quest 2, as I tried a friends and love it, but I do miss playing VO in VR!

Yeah but it won't connect to online servers without updating. Only offline game is possible. Then a possible "hack" seems unlikely.
