targeting on phone screen
I've noticed that tapping the screen to target an object in front like an asteroid sometimes picks up the asteroid behind it. This is quite common up close but it also happens at larger distances.

That mode uses Select Nearest In Front an has always been finicky with asteroids that are near each other. It uses a heuristic based on distance from you combined with screen distance of the center point (where the target reticle is drawn) of the asteroid and the touch point.
Ah thanks for the explanation.
